Job Summary

The 3rd Class Engineer is responsible for monitoring and participating in boiler plant operations at McLean Hospital(MCL). This role requires a licensed Engineer to safely monitor, maintain, and adjust Powerhouse equipment and related systems for efficient operation and to ensure a reliable energy source for fluctuating heating, cooling, and emergency power systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitoring equipment at specified intervals and recording data in operation logs: boilers, pumps, gauges, pressure, water tanks, and other regulated equipment as well as the related building automation software (BAS) to consistently provide a balanced and efficient operating environment.
  • Opening and closing valves; starting, stopping, and/or adjusting equipment in response to changing weather conditions or energy requirements to ensure optimum efficiency.
  • Water and electric meter readings, fire pumps, and reading other meters and gauges at specified intervals to ensure equipment is operating normally.
  • Investigating unusual readings and checking operating systems to detect faulty equipment.
Equipment Maintenance

Safely perform preventative and corrective maintenance to limit equipment failure and reduce equipment downtime. Help establish and update downtime schedules for equipment updates and overhauls. Monitor and log MWRA water treatment tanks. Perform and log the results of bi-weekly chemical tests of water and steam systems. Adjust the chemical treatment to maintain proper chemical values as specified by the chemical treatment company representative. Troubleshoot any abnormal readings and correct identified malfunctioning equipment affecting the system.

Powerhouse Housekeeping

Proper storage of tools, parts, and supplies. Respond to after-hours calls regarding equipment, systems, and/or software in the Powerhouse within their scope of responsibility.

High school diploma, GED, or satisfactory work history. Valid MA Wastewater Operator license, minimum Industrial Operator Grade 2

5 years of trade experience in a boiler or steam power plant as a steam engineer, fireman, control room operator, or auxiliary operator; Held and used an equivalent license in the United States Merchant Marine for 2 years; Computer proficiency required. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Outlook or Gmail.

Ability to learn new software. Must use personal phone to complete portions of work assignments using hospital-provided software.
