Position Overview:
The Pediatric Speech Therapy Specialist is responsible for delivering, overseeing, and managing comprehensive patient care services. This includes, but is not limited to, assessment, diagnosis, and therapeutic interventions, as well as treatment planning, objective setting, family education, and meticulous documentation to ensure optimal patient outcomes. The Specialist guarantees that patient care aligns with the organization's protocols, professional standards, and community requirements, while adhering to Federal and State regulations. This role also acts as an advocate for patients and their families, ensuring effective communication with all stakeholders. Collaboration across disciplines is essential to maintain consistent patient care. Engagement in quality assurance and customer service initiatives is also a key responsibility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Adhere to all safety protocols and procedures to ensure personal and patient safety.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care planning sessions, rehabilitation meetings, and family education to relay patient progress during therapy.
- Inform staff, healthcare professionals, and insurance providers about the advantages and functional outcomes of therapeutic interventions.
- Formulate treatment plans and deliver therapy in accordance with reimbursement guidelines to achieve the best functional outcomes for patients.
- Accurately complete all necessary documentation, including evaluations, daily progress notes, discharge summaries, and monthly reports.
- Engage in ongoing professional development through seminars and workshops to stay updated on new clinical skills and methodologies.
- Maintain required state licensure, certifications, and credentials.
- Follow all safety regulations and utilize appropriate safety equipment.
- Supervise the activities of rehabilitation aides and students in compliance with State and Federal regulations.
- Ensure that all therapeutic equipment is functioning properly before patient care and report any malfunctions.
- Keep the work environment clean and organized.
- Facilitate in-service training sessions or educational presentations to enhance clinical and professional knowledge among team members.
- Submit billing, payroll, and expense reports promptly.
- Make appropriate referrals to other rehabilitation team members as necessary.
- Conduct regular screenings of residents and review restorative care plans quarterly.
- Provide updates on patient progress verbally and/or in writing to the Director of Rehabilitation and during care plan meetings.
- Attend interdisciplinary meetings as per departmental policies.
- Serve as a clinical instructor for SLP student affiliates at the facility.
- Perform any additional duties as assigned by the Director of Rehabilitation or upper management.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Master's Degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited institution.
Experience:
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in speech pathology, preferably with pediatric patients.
- At least one (1) year of experience in a residential/assisted living or skilled nursing environment is preferred.
- Experience with CVA, TBI, modalities, and splinting is preferred.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to read, write, and interpret clinical documents.
- Effective communication with patients and colleagues.
- Knowledge of relevant codes and regulations.
- Commitment to following safety policies and health department regulations.
Licenses and Certifications:
- Licensure as mandated by New York State regulations.
- Certification through ASHA.
Physical Requirements:
- Position requires prolonged periods of standing, reaching, and walking throughout the workday.
- Ability to stoop, bend, lift, and carry items weighing up to 25 pounds as part of essential functions.
- Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds, if necessary, to assist in moving patients.
- Exposure to adverse indoor and outdoor environmental conditions, bloodborne pathogens, physical hazards, and chemical hazards may occur.
