Job Overview

Key Responsibilities:

  • Section Coordination:
    • Ensures the accuracy of test results and maintains quality control documentation.
    • Monitors and implements corrective actions as necessary.
    • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and document control systems.
    • Guarantees adherence to all relevant federal, state, and local regulations, as well as accreditation standards.
    • Participates in the planning and upkeep of the laboratory information system (LIS).
    • Oversees all changes to computer systems within the department, ensuring proper documentation and approvals.
    • Builds and nurtures relationships with customers and suppliers.
    • Implements and assesses service standards.
    • Encourages a collaborative approach to patient care and problem-solving across departments.
    • Trains technologists on new methodologies and equipment.
    • Develops educational programs for residents in collaboration with the Medical Director.
    • Takes on additional responsibilities in the absence of the Manager.
    • Manages inventory to ensure adequate supply levels.
    • Coordinates supply requests in line with budgetary constraints.
    • Oversees maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment and facilities.
  • Staff Management:
    • Assists in the recruitment and selection of new personnel.
    • Supervises staffing to ensure adequate coverage for all services.
    • Adjusts staff assignments proactively based on operational needs.
    • Evaluates the necessity for overtime and temporary staffing.
    • Manages staff timekeeping and leave requests.
    • Ensures consistent quality and customer service from department staff.
    • Facilitates orientation and training for new employees, ensuring compliance with established guidelines.
    • Maintains documentation of staff competency and training, including continuing education.
    • Promotes adherence to personal conduct standards among staff.
  • Technical Oversight:
    • Follows departmental policies and procedures diligently.
    • Conducts complex testing across various laboratory sections as required.
    • Maintains quality control and assurance records as mandated by accrediting bodies.
    • Coordinates the operation and upkeep of laboratory equipment, ensuring service records are maintained.
    • Facilitates troubleshooting and repair of laboratory instruments.
    • Understands and manages maintenance agreement terms.
    • Coordinates the development and revision of laboratory procedures and documentation.
    • Participates in laboratory meetings and continuing education initiatives.
    • Organizes technical training sessions for laboratory staff.
    • Handles proficiency testing in accordance with laboratory standards.
    • Identifies and addresses deficiencies with appropriate monitoring.
  • Financial Oversight:
    • Develops and maintains productivity metrics.
    • Ensures accurate and timely billing for laboratory services.
    • Operating Budget:
      • Assists in the preparation and monitoring of financial budgets.
      • Coordinates product evaluations aligned with materials management protocols.
      • Facilitates the development of new program proposals.
      • Reconciles statistical data to adhere to revenue management standards.
      • Maintains productivity benchmarks, aligning staff activities with financial objectives.
      • Participates in negotiations for supplies and service agreements.
      • Ensures compliance with research policies in laboratory activities.
    • Capital Budget:
      • Coordinates the preparation of proposals for major equipment acquisitions.
      • Engages in the negotiation process for equipment purchases.
      • Participates in planning for facility changes.
  • Professional Development:
    • Sets and pursues personal development goals in alignment with annual objectives.
    • Identifies opportunities for professional growth and development.
    • Communicates staff development needs to management.
  • Leadership and Problem Solving:
    • Adheres to management standards for leadership and communication.
    • Coordinates critical situations involving patients and staff, consulting with management as needed.
    • Facilitates effective communication regarding incidents with relevant personnel.
    • Promotes the philosophy and objectives of the organization.
    • Identifies and communicates key issues to management.
  • Medical Staff Relations:
    • Collaborates with Medical Directors to implement departmental goals and objectives.
    • Works with Medical Directors to resolve operational challenges.
    • Supports quality management initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Must qualify as a General Supervisor as per CLIA 88 regulations.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a relevant scientific field with a minimum of 5 years of clinical laboratory experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as MT, HTL, CT, or Cytogenetics through a recognized board.
  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline.
