Job Summary:
Northwell Health is seeking a skilled Nuclear Medicine Technologist to join our team. As a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, you will be responsible for operating nuclear medicine apparatus and auxiliary equipment, performing diagnostic scans, and producing outputs for physician interpretation.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate nuclear medicine apparatus and auxiliary equipment to perform diagnostic scans and produce outputs for physician interpretation.
- Maintain and clean equipment to ensure optimal performance and patient safety.
- Properly identify patients and maintain quality patient care throughout procedures.
- Assure patient safety by securing patients on the procedure table and assessing individual patient needs.
- Interact with patients and families in a courteous and respectful manner, explaining procedures and requirements.
- Collect and document clinical information relevant to procedures, including patient interviews and medical records.
- Complete assessments by utilizing medical records and Nuclear Medicine requests to ensure appropriateness of procedures ordered.
- Establish effective communication with patients, families, and healthcare providers to successfully complete procedures.
- Keep patients and families informed of progress and delays associated with procedures.
- Interface with patients, staff, and physicians to facilitate improvement of the patient experience.
- Work to improve Press Ganey scores through patient satisfaction.
- Provide thorough and accurate documentation in NMIS, RIS, medical records, and patient assessment forms.
- Follow established procedures for reporting and documenting completed STAT requests.
- Properly dispose of radioactive waste and document its disposition in NMIS.
- Perform radiation surveys and wipe tests as assigned and document results.
- Check doses for correct labeling and content prior to administration.
- Inject patients using aseptic technique and accurately prepare rooms and patients for procedures.
- Clean and organize rooms and return supplies after procedures.
- Select and set patient orientation, collimator, camera, computer acquisition, and radionuclide peak.
- Process studies using appropriate defaults and adjust parameters as necessary.
- Obtain required views per established exam protocols and document reasons for modifications or unobtainable views.
- Verify images before submitting for interpretation, including patient name, date, medical record number, view ID, pharmaceutical, injection site, and artifacts.
- Perform established QC procedures on cameras and dose calibrators, monitor results, and take corrective action or initiate repair as necessary.
- Document QC results and survey each isotope shipment as established by BRH and enter in NMIS correctly.
- Enter patient dose information in NMIS and on NM request.
- Prepare radiopharmaceutical kits according to manufacturer's directions and established infection control and radiation safety standards.
- Perform radioactive waste disposal in NMIS as required and record disposal of all radioactive materials.
- Remove labels and enter in NMIS.
- In the absence of supervisory personnel, assume leadership responsibilities as required.
- Notify supervisory personnel of shortages of supplies, unusual problems, or situations within the department or changes in patient scheduling.
- Notify supervisory personnel of infection control deficiencies or unsafe working conditions or practices.
- Perform quality control and preventive maintenance checks as assigned.
- Complete, revise, or cancel Nuclear Medicine orders in RIS per department policies.
- Transport patients when necessary to expedite examinations and procedures.
Requirements:
- Graduate from an accredited Nuclear Medicine Technology program, required.
- Bachelor's Degree, preferred.
- New York State Department of Health license as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, required.
- American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT) registration or Certification by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB), required.
- Minimum of two (2) years experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist, required.
