Position Overview

The Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Optometrist. This position is crucial in delivering direct patient care to our esteemed Veteran population.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will be responsible for:
  • Maintaining a comprehensive understanding of the patient care protocols within the Department of Veterans Affairs and its associated facilities.
  • Adhering to Medical Center Bylaws and VHA Rules and Regulations while being familiar with existing clinical guidelines.
  • Providing exceptional care in various settings, including outpatient clinics and as a consultant.
  • Diagnosing and managing refractive conditions, binocular dysfunctions, ocular diseases, and systemic disease complications.
  • Ensuring quality consultative and follow-up care for patients.
  • Exhibiting professionalism and courtesy in all interactions.
  • Referring patients to ophthalmology for further diagnosis and treatment as necessary.
  • Facilitating effective communication between clinicians to ensure seamless patient care.
  • Addressing patient complaints locally and escalating when necessary.
  • Participating in mandatory meetings and contributing to educational and research initiatives.
  • Conducting thorough clinical evaluations, including medical history assessments and various ocular tests.
  • Collaborating with fellow optometrists, ophthalmologists, and support staff to achieve shared objectives.
  • Managing administrative aspects of patient care, including timely documentation and progress notes.
  • Demonstrating excellent communication skills and teamwork with all healthcare providers.

Work Schedule

The work schedule will vary based on organizational needs, which may include rotating call coverage, weekdays, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • A Doctor of Optometry degree from an accredited institution.
  • An active, unrestricted license to practice optometry.
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment physical examination.

Physical Standards

The role requires moderate lifting, carrying, and various physical activities essential for performing job functions effectively. Candidates must be physically and mentally capable of fulfilling the responsibilities of this position without risk to themselves or others.
