Job Responsibilities

The U.S. Department of the Interior is seeking temporary personnel to join engine crews. Candidates will be involved in various firefighting operations, including fire suppression and monitoring. For further details on Crew Types, please refer to the relevant resources.

Employment Conditions

SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after December 31, 1959, must be registered for Selective Service or be exempt. To register or verify your registration, please visit the appropriate website.

BACKGROUND CHECKS: Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a background investigation and/or fingerprint check. Inability to meet these requirements may lead to the cancellation of the employment offer or termination.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Candidates must pass an initial pre-employment physical examination and the work capacity fitness test, which includes carrying a 45 lb pack for 3 miles within 45 minutes. Any medical condition that poses a risk to oneself or others will disqualify a candidate from employment.

DRUG TESTING: A mandatory pre-employment drug test is required. A verified positive drug test will result in disqualification from the position. Once employed, individuals are subject to random drug testing in accordance with the Department's Drug-Free Workplace Program.

Some positions may necessitate a valid state driver's license, and certain roles may require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Candidates must be at least 18 years old at the time of appointment.

All positions have specific medical qualification requirements.

Qualifications

Important Note: Hours worked per week must be clearly stated for each season and position held in your resume.

To qualify for a GS-03 position:
Candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria:
1). Six months of general work experience or 6 months of Firefighter training as part of a high school curriculum may substitute for experience on a month-for-month basis.
General Experience may include: Any work experience or military service demonstrating the ability to follow directions and comprehend a variety of instructions, regulations, and procedures, thereby showcasing the capability to perform or learn the duties of the position.

2). One year of education or training beyond high school related to the work of the position.
-OR-
3). A combination of education and general work experience as described above.

To qualify for a GS-04 position:
Candidates must meet at least one of the following criteria:
1). Six months of general work experience, which can be any work experience AND 6 months of specialized work experience equivalent to the GS-03 level duties.
Examples of specialized work experience may include:

Wildland Fire Suppression such as digging hand lines, building or patrolling firelines, suppressing spot fires, mopping up fires, hose lays, and connecting buckets to drop water or retardant during firefighting operations. Wildland Fuels Management such as prescribed burning, clearing burned areas within firelines, felling snags or trees, and collecting fuel loads. Monitoring Wildland Fire such as observing weather, topography, smoke, fire effects, fire behavior, and collecting fire-related data. Wildland Fire Preparedness such as maintaining fire tools and equipment including Pulaskis, shovels, chainsaws, fire hoses, and vehicles.

2). Completion of a 2-year course of study above high school from an accredited institution in Wildland Fire Training, Wildland Fire Science, or related fields, including at least 12 semester hours of coursework in forestry, range management, or conservation.

3). A combination of the education and work experience described above.

Candidates must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

Physical Demands: The role requires arduous exertion for extended periods, including running, walking, climbing, and lifting items over 50 pounds.

Work Environment: Employees will work in forest, range, and desert environments with steep terrain and uneven surfaces. Conditions may include extreme temperatures and risks such as smoke inhalation and exposure to wildlife. Personal protective equipment is mandatory.
