Position Overview

The Social Justice Learning Institute is committed to enhancing the educational, health, and overall well-being of youth of color. Our mission is to empower these individuals to take charge of their educational journeys through research-driven community and social change initiatives. We equip students with the skills to conduct research on community issues through a comprehensive yearlong curriculum, while also providing essential academic support such as tutoring, homework assistance, and college preparatory education. Our vision is to cultivate an educational environment where youth emerge as engaged citizens, utilizing their unique talents to foster positive change in their communities.

Role Summary:

The Academic and Career Services Coordinator (ACSC) plays a pivotal role in nurturing strong connections with students, enabling them to establish and pursue personal and academic objectives. A primary goal of this position is to support students in graduating from high school and transitioning to higher education or career pathways. The ACSC is responsible for individualized skills development, assisting with college applications, and providing referrals for both personal and academic support.

The ACSC is an integral member of the team implementing the Young Men's Program, collaborating closely with the Program and Curriculum Coach, the Teacher-of-Record, school administration, and other educational leaders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Teaching & Coaching:
    • Participate in curriculum and program training sessions.
    • Deliver YMP curriculum as needed.
    • Lead lessons focused on college and career readiness throughout the academic year.
    • Develop personalized academic plans with students, ensuring progress towards their goals.
    • Guide students through financial aid processes and college/trade school applications.
  • Student Support and Relationship Building:
    • Build and maintain trusting relationships with students.
    • Organize meetings involving students, counselors, teachers, and parents.
    • Support academic intervention initiatives.
    • Collaborate with on-campus staff and administrators to foster a supportive environment.
    • Plan college visits, program activities, and retreats in partnership with the Program & Curriculum Coach.
    • Connect students with SAT/ACT preparation resources.
    • Facilitate college application workshops and assist seniors with their applications.
    • Maintain strong relationships with school counselors.
  • Data Management:
    • Utilize SJLI's online database effectively.
    • Collect and input student data from various sources.
    • Generate site data reports and monthly summaries.
