Actuarial Director Job Description

CNA Insurance is seeking a seasoned Actuary to lead our Small Business Pricing team. As a key member of our Actuarial organization, you will be responsible for managing complex actuarial studies and pricing strategies, leading a team of 3, and providing consultation to underwriting partners.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Direct the work activities and have full management responsibility for the performance, coaching, and development of a team.
  2. Provide business partners and functional subject matter experts with actuarial guidance and business insights related to profitability.
  3. Build strong relationships with direct reports, peers, business partners, and leaders across multiple functions to ensure optimal implementation of business strategies aligned with actuarial insights and analytics.
  4. Collaborate with and influence senior leadership in the development and implementation of pricing strategy for Small Business.
  5. Participate with senior leadership in the development and implementation of actuarial policies, business strategies, and goals, regularly evaluating performance against goals, and holding self and team accountable for achieving desired results.
  6. Oversee the production of highly technical actuarial analyses and reports to communicate to other analytical staff and to senior management.
  7. Stay up to date in actuarial expertise, state/territory regulations, and industry trends and development to lead decisions related to line of business.
  8. Ensure team is maintaining clear documentation of methods.
Requirements:
  1. Senior level knowledge of actuarial principles, practices, and procedures and industry issues as they relate to the organization.
  2. Ability to effectively lead, coach, and develop an actuarial group.
  3. Ability to achieve results by taking a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives.
  4. Experience influencing business partners at various levels.
  5. Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with the ability to effectively resolve complex situations and issues.
  6. Proven ability to exercise professional judgment, manage available resources, and assume responsibility for decisions which have impact.
  7. Ability to creatively and effectively manage through ambiguous and challenging problems, takes appropriate levels of risk, and leads through change.
Education and Experience:
  1. Bachelor's Degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent.
  2. Typically a minimum of ten years of related work experience.
  3. Associate or Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society.
