General Overview

Under the supervision of the Executive Director or Assistant Executive Director, the Clinical Nutrition Specialist delivers essential clinical services related to nutritional assessment and documentation, adhering to all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

This role involves ensuring compliance with established policies and procedures while overseeing the planning, management, and execution of the Food & Nutrition Services Department's operations.

In the temporary absence of the Director of Food & Nutrition Services, the Clinical Nutrition Specialist will take charge of directing the department and its associated programs.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct initial, change of condition, annual, and quarterly nutritional assessments, including MDS and Care Plans in accordance with regulations and company policies.
  • Engage in discharge planning and contribute to the development and implementation of patient Care Plans and assessments.
  • Interview patients and family members to gather comprehensive dietary histories.
  • Fulfill administrative duties such as completing necessary documentation and submitting reports to the Executive Director as required.
  • Collaborate with administration, medical staff, nursing staff, and other departments to plan food service programs and activities.
  • Establish and maintain objectives and standards for nutritional services.
  • Assist the Director of Food & Nutrition Services in the implementation and coordination of departmental policies and procedures.
  • Review and recommend changes to department policies, procedures, manuals, and job descriptions at least annually.
  • Participate in the development and monitoring of the department budget.
  • Facilitate in-service education programs, on-the-job training, and orientation for new department personnel.
  • Support the recruitment, selection, and training of a Director of Food & Nutrition Services as needed.
  • Involve residents and families in planning objectives and goals.
  • Review and modify menus according to the Diet Manual.
  • Authorize and instruct staff on therapeutic diets not listed on the cycle menu as per physician orders.
  • Inspect food service areas for compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Serve on various facility committees as appointed by the Executive Director.
  • Document monthly on high-risk residents and conduct weekly weight committee meetings.
Standard Requirements

Qualifications

Education/Training/Experience:

  • Must be a qualified dietitian or clinically qualified nutrition professional, either full-time, part-time, or on a consultancy basis.
  • Possess a bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution in the United States, with completion of an accredited program in nutrition or dietetics.
  • Have completed a minimum of 900 hours of supervised dietetics practice under a registered dietitian or nutrition professional.
  • Be licensed or certified as a dietitian or nutrition professional in the state of practice.
Physical and Skill Requirements

Must be able to perform physical tasks such as bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and standing for extended periods. Requires manual dexterity for operating standard office equipment and normal hearing and vision ranges.

Must be capable of lifting at least 50 pounds and passing a pre-employment physical examination.

Possess proficient reading, writing, grammar, and mathematics skills, along with strong interpersonal and communication abilities.

Must demonstrate knowledge of safety techniques and be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
