Job Title: Mechanic

We are seeking a skilled Mechanic to join our team at the City of La Mesa, CA. As a Mechanic, you will be responsible for performing routine maintenance and repairs on a variety of vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform skilled vehicle maintenance duties involved in troubleshooting, diagnosing, repairing and maintaining a variety of mechanical, hydraulic, and electronic systems on light and heavy gasoline and diesel power driven vehicles and equipment.
  • Overhaul, repair, and adjust engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, hydraulic equipment, generators, distributors, and pumps; fit and adjust bearings; install axles and wheels.
  • Diagnose, maintain, and repair electrical system components, ignition systems, alternators, starters, and batteries.
  • Diagnose and repair front and rear drive axles, drive train components, belts, gears, and chain drives.
  • Replace or repair faulty parts including wheel bearings, clutches, oil seals, shock absorbers, exhaust systems, steering mechanisms, and related parts and equipment.
  • Tune up engines by replacing ignition parts; recondition and adjust carburetors and fuel injection systems; repair and maintain emission control systems.
  • Repair, adjust, and replace brake systems including wheel cylinders, master cylinders, disc pads, machine drums, and rotors, and hydraulic and air brakes. Diagnose and repair Anti-Lock Brake Systems (ABS) air and hydraulic brake systems.
  • Weld, fabricate, and assemble parts and equipment for City automotive and heavy equipment; fabricate and modify tools as needed.
  • Maintain and repair shop equipment; clean and maintain assigned work area; dispose of hazardous materials according to established procedures.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance including changing oil, cleaning vehicles, and filling fuel tanks.
  • Maintain work, time, and material records on an electronic fleet management system.
  • Inspect, repair, balance, and replace tires on cars and trucks as required.
  • Assist other mechanics in the performance of mechanical repairs as required.
  • Perform repair and component replacements on vehicle air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems.
Requirements:
  • Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by completion of a mechanical apprenticeship program.
  • At least two years of experience in automotive and equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Possession of an appropriate, unrestricted valid Class A or Class B driver's license with air brake endorsement, or ability to possess one within six months of hire.
  • Possession and maintenance of ASE certifications in automotive repair.
  • Possession of more than a basic tool set that includes power and impact tools.
