Job Overview
The Straz Center for the Performing Arts is seeking a skilled Security Officer to join its team. As a vital member of our security team, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and security of students, employees, and visitors to our center. This role requires a strong sense of awareness and attention to detail, as well as excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

About the Role
This position involves patrolling grounds and buildings, serving as a deterrent to criminal activity, reporting safety hazards and security deficiencies, and making reports regarding suspicious activity. You will also provide customer service to the public by giving directions and information to visitors. Located in downtown Tampa, the Straz offers flexible hours, event-based schedules including evenings and weekends, and a team-based work environment. The Straz benefits for part-time staff include employee discounts and a 403(b) plan.

Responsibilities
Some of your key responsibilities will include:
  • Providing all guests with a positive experience from arrival to departure.
  • Assisting and directing all visitors to their destinations.
  • Serving as a source of information pertaining to the Center and its activities.
  • Responding to all visitors' concerns/complaints in a prompt, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Accurately checking all staff/guest bags prior to entry, as directed.
  • Patrolling premises, the exterior and interior of the buildings, to ensure the integrity of all access points; identifying any unsightly occurrences; and responding to issues as needed.
  • Accurately and thoroughly completing incident reports.
  • Enforcing building policies and procedures, as applicable.
  • Responding to all emergencies promptly.
  • Working cooperatively with all staff members, law enforcement officers, and fire/rescue personnel.
  • Reporting to assigned posts (or reception desks) as needed to monitor crowds and/or entrances during events.
  • Locking/unlocking doors as necessary.
  • BAGGING METERS FOR BUS, TRUCK, AND OTHER PRODUCTION VEHICLE PARKING.
  • Controlling and monitoring parking on Center premises and adjacent streets.
  • Assisting with the arrival and departure of visitors arriving by bus.
  • Monitoring video cameras.
  • Electronically controlling employee and non-employee building access.
  • Verifying credentials and issuing permanent and/or temporary badges.
  • Preparing post log, daily guard reports, and other logs/reports as assigned.
  • Maintaining a clean and neat appearance during working hours.
  • Undertaking any other duties as directed by the applicable supervisor.

Requirements
To be successful in this role, you will need:
  • A willingness and ability to work a flex schedule of various hours and multiple shifts, to include evenings, weekends, and holiday shifts, as needed.
  • An ability to interact in a sensitive, courteous, and understanding way with members of a diverse community, including students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • An ability to make sound decisions, based on good judgment, on a frequent basis.
  • An ability to clearly document activity, both verbally and in writing.
  • Proficiency in the safe operation of a golf cart.
  • Proficiency in the use of hand-held radio and '10 codes'.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office suite and the ability to retain training on security badging software and access control software.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish a plus.

Compensation and Benefits
This role comes with an estimated salary of $42,000 per year, depending on experience. The Straz Center for the Performing Arts offers a comprehensive benefits package, including employee discounts and a 403(b) plan.
