Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Veterinarian to join our Animal Services team at the County of Santa Barbara. As a key member of our team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality veterinary medical services, including spay/neuter surgeries, medical care, and disease control measures for animals in our shelters. You will also be involved in developing and implementing policies and procedures to ensure the health and well-being of animals in our care.

Responsibilities
  • Provide veterinary medical services, including spay/neuter surgeries, medical care, and disease control measures for animals in our shelters.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure the health and well-being of animals in our care.
  • Supervise and train staff, including Registered Veterinary Technicians, contract veterinarians, and animal control officers.
  • Conduct and evaluate treatment plans, disease control measures, and hands-on medical treatment for animals in our shelters.
  • Administer injections, provide training in, and supervise the humane euthanasia of animals in accordance with California State Law and Department guidelines and policies.
  • Investigate, prevent, control, and eradicate infectious diseases of animals, including those transmissible to humans.
  • Maintain animal medical and sterilization records and care recommendations for all shelter animal admissions.
  • Provide staff training, prepare operational reports, and prepare other required records, reports, and correspondence.
Requirements
  • Active license to practice as a veterinarian issued by the State of California Veterinary Medical Board.
  • Two years of experience working in shelter medicine or a high-volume veterinary clinic or rescue.
  • Possession of a valid Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate/license for the prescription of controlled medications.
  • Possession and maintenance of a current, valid National Accreditation Number (NAN) issued by the National Veterinary Accreditation Program (NVAP).
  • Possession of a valid California Class C driver license.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Two years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Veterinary degree with a focus on shelter medicine.
  • Human-Animal Bond Certification from the North American Veterinary Community.
Working Conditions

This position requires working in a fast-paced environment with a high volume of animals. The successful candidate must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and must be able to lift/carry animals weighing up to 75 lbs.
