Job Summary

This is a training position within the Police Division of the City of Hampton, VA. The Police Cadet will receive training and development in various functions of the Police Division, with the goal of becoming a Police Patrol Officer.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform a wide variety of duties associated with police functions, including directing traffic, maintaining recordkeeping systems, providing dispatcher services, and working as a school crossing guard.
  • Learn to make detailed reports and study police procedures, manuals, and directives to understand normal operating requirements and the inter-relationship of various phases of police work.
  • Attend training classes within the division to learn new skills and knowledge, and may be scheduled to attend classes outside of the division.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited high school course of study or successful completion of the GED.
  • Ability to be courteous yet firm with the public, and possess the ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
  • Good skills of observation and memory, excellent moral character, and good physical condition.
  • Must successfully pass a city physical examination, psychological examination, background investigation (to include a polygraph examination), and physical agility examination.
  • Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license and have a satisfactory driver's record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
  • Must be between 18 and 24 years of age.
