Job Summary

Guidehouse is seeking a skilled Financial Counselor to join our team. As a Financial Counselor, you will be responsible for estimating patient liability for services rendered and communicating with patients regarding financial responsibility. You will also be responsible for collecting patient portions due before discharge and ensuring that all processes are completed daily or weekly.

Key Responsibilities
  • Determine patient responsibility and eligibility through Insurance, Federal, State, and/or County government benefits.
  • Review accounts for proper plan codes, financial class, and patient type.
  • Contact appropriate agencies to verify assumptions of liability.
  • Negotiate flat rates on accounts where the patient has no linkage to government programs.
  • Communicate with patients and inform them of financial responsibility prior to discharge.
  • Set up payment plans with patients prior to discharge and document payment arrangements in patient accounting systems.
  • Collect monies from patients when there is an estimated patient liability due on the account.
  • Monitor Medicare days and co-insurance days on in-house patients.
  • Represent the patient(s) at Medicaid or SSI fair hearings/appeals.
  • Interface with facility Social Services and Case Management Departments regarding inpatient admissions and discharges.
  • Document all payer and patient financial information in the hospital computer system.
  • Retrieve Inpatient Census patient information within the facility to follow up on In House patients no insured or under insured.
  • Obtain complete and accurate patient information including possible insurance(s), and financial information by communicating with patients, family members, and physicians regarding their stay.
  • Communicate daily with co-workers, hospital, and management regarding account progress and/or other issues.
  • Utilize organization and prioritization skills in daily tasks.
  • Maintain open, positive, and professional communication at all times.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent work experience required.
  • 1-3 years' experience with medical terminology, data entry, prior admitting, entitlement, business office or physician office experience.
  • PC skills in a Windows environment are required.
  • Working knowledge/experience of Federal, State and County eligibility programs.
  • Must be able to type 35-45 words per minute.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • Knowledge of MS4 helpful.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to initiate and follow through on projects and work independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
