Role Overview:
Responsible for executing cleaning tasks, relocating furniture, and performing other related custodial responsibilities while adhering to established safety protocols and work schedules. This role may involve assisting in the Mailroom/Shipping & Receiving or Groundskeeping, contingent upon supervisor direction and requisite training. The position is designed for a diverse and multicultural workplace.

Key Responsibilities:
This outline serves to illustrate the various tasks and responsibilities expected of the individual in this role. It is not an exhaustive enumeration of all potential duties:

  • Maintain cleanliness of walls, ceilings, windows, floors, restrooms, furniture, and fixtures.
  • Oversee supplies, equipment, and storage areas.
  • Collect and dispose of waste and refuse from designated locations.
  • Assemble and conduct minor repairs on fixtures and furnishings; notify supervisor of equipment needing external service.
  • Distribute supplies as directed.
  • Ensure cleanliness of entrances (i.e., litter removal, sweeping, and mopping).
  • Perform manual snow removal and apply salt as necessary.
  • Operate grounds maintenance equipment as required. Load, unload, and relocate furniture and fixtures, including assembly and disassembly as needed.
  • May supervise student workers assigned to the area in accordance with the Master Labor Agreement.
  • Review communications in Word documents and Excel spreadsheets as necessary.
  • Carry out additional related duties as assigned.
  • Willingness to work extra hours as needed.

Required Knowledge and Skills:
  • Ability to learn and apply accepted cleaning and maintenance techniques.
  • Capability to follow verbal and written instructions and diagrams.
  • Physical ability to lift and move items weighing up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Capacity to work independently or collaboratively as needed.
  • Familiarity with operating aerial and high lifts is preferred.
  • Customer service orientation.
  • Basic computer proficiency.

Minimum Education and Experience:
Education:
High school diploma or equivalent; college credits preferred.

Experience:
At least one (1) year of custodial experience, with a preference for groundskeeping experience and working with a diverse student and staff population.

Licenses:
Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan driver's license. A State of Michigan pesticide applicator license is preferred.
