The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a dedicated Poultry Grader to oversee operations at poultry processing facilities. The primary responsibilities of this role include applying USDA grading standards, ensuring compliance with governmental regulations, and validating all documentation related to grading and inspection processes. This position is funded through specific user fees associated with grading services requested by the industry.
Work Schedule
This role requires flexibility as it involves day and night shifts, along with regular travel. Candidates should be prepared for potential weekend and holiday work due to unforeseen circumstances. Night shift differentials apply for hours worked between 4:30 PM and 5:30 AM, and opportunities for overtime and holiday pay are available.
Minimum Qualifications
While knowledge of manufacturing, quality assurance, or agricultural practices, particularly in the poultry sector, is advantageous, candidates with a willingness to learn federal and state regulations will also be considered. Essential qualifications include the ability to interpret USDA and state manuals, work independently, possess basic math skills, and demonstrate reliability and attention to detail. A high school diploma or GED is required.
Employment Conditions
Candidates must obtain a USDA Poultry Grading License after completing a minimum of 160 hours of on-the-job training. The role demands physical stamina, including the ability to work in environments with fluctuating temperatures, wet surfaces, and elevated noise levels, as well as the capacity to lift up to 50 pounds regularly. Flexibility to work in various facilities during emergencies is also required. A valid driver's license and a responsible driving record are essential.
Additional Considerations
A combination of relevant education, training, and experience that demonstrates the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities, particularly in poultry science and USDA grading regulations, is preferred.
