About the Fellowship

Carilion Clinic is seeking highly motivated and dedicated Nurse Practitioner and Physician Assistant candidates for a unique Emergency Medicine Observation Fellowship. This 12-month program is designed to provide advanced practice providers with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in observation medicine.

Key Responsibilities
  • Participate in a comprehensive training program that includes patient care in a Level 1 Trauma Center, simulation lab training, off-service rotations, and rotations to community hospital emergency departments and observation units.
  • Develop skills in the management of patients in the Emergency Department Observation Unit, including basic ultrasound diagnostic abilities and EKG interpretation.
  • Conduct comprehensive health histories, perform physical, psychological, and developmental assessments, and discriminate between normal and abnormal findings.
  • Assess, diagnose, and manage selected acute and chronic illnesses and conditions, and perform or request laboratory/radiology procedures as needed.
  • Utilize automated computer systems, including electronic medical records, to accurately record assessment findings and document patient information.
  • Coordinate necessary appointments and referrals, and consult with supervising physicians as appropriate.
Requirements
  • Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program or Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Clinical experience appropriate to specific practice/department preferred.
  • Current Physician Assistants or Nurse Practitioner license (PA) required.
  • DEA licensure required.
  • AHA BLS, ACLS certification required.
  • PALS required within 6 months of Fellowship training.
