Certified Nursing Assistant

OVERVIEW:
Deliver exceptional nursing care to residents in a long-term care facility that upholds their rights, dignity, autonomy, and individuality under the guidance of a Registered Nurse.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide personalized attention that fosters each resident's ability to achieve or maintain optimal physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
- Be well-versed in the individualized care plan for residents and offer support in accordance with these plans. Contribute to the care planning process by sharing specific insights and observations regarding residents' needs and preferences with the charge nurse or care planning team.
- Attend to the unique needs of residents, which may include assistance with grooming, bathing, oral hygiene, feeding, incontinence care, toileting, colostomy care, use of prosthetic devices, transferring, ambulation, range of motion exercises, communication, and other requirements aligned with individual care protocols.
- Ensure the comfort, privacy, and dignity of each resident while delivering services. Engage with residents in a manner that conveys warmth and fosters a compassionate environment.
- Fully comprehend all aspects of residents' rights, including the right to be free from restraints and abuse.
- Promptly report any incidents or signs of resident abuse or violations of rights to the charge nurse or administrative personnel.
- Assist in maintaining a safe, tidy, and hygienic environment; report any environmental issues to the charge nurse, such as lighting or equipment malfunctions.
- Safeguard the personal belongings of each resident, including eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, furnishings, jewelry, clothing, and memorabilia. Report any missing items according to established protocols and participate in efforts to recover them.
- Monitor residents for changes in condition or behavior and promptly communicate these changes to the appropriate licensed nursing staff.
- Provide care that preserves each resident's skin integrity to prevent pressure ulcers, skin tears, and other damage by changing incontinent residents, repositioning immobile residents, and applying moisturizers to delicate skin.
- Respond to residents' call bells promptly and courteously.
- Perform various tasks assigned by the charge nurse, including taking vital signs, weighing residents, applying creams/ointments, and collecting specimens.
- Assist in orienting residents and their families to the nursing home upon admission and during transfers.
- Accompany residents to appointments such as beauty services, activities, and religious services.
- Complete certified nursing assistant documentation accurately, using proper coding for Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) to record care provided or other relevant information in accordance with departmental policies.
- Adhere to prescribed safety and infection control protocols, including thorough handwashing, using disposable gloves when necessary, and properly disposing of soiled materials.
- Support an environment that promotes a homelike atmosphere.
- Participate in the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
A high school diploma or equivalent; successful completion of a state-approved Nursing Assistant Certification course or other education that meets state certification requirements. Must possess current Nursing Assistant Certifications in the state of practice. Knowledge of resident rights is essential to ensure an environment that respects privacy, dignity, and well-being in a safe and secure setting. Current CPR certification from the American Heart Association is required.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This position does not have supervisory responsibilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
This role operates within a healthcare setting, requiring regular movement to various locations within the care center. The incumbent may encounter viruses, diseases, and infections from patients and specimens. Extended periods of time at a video display terminal may be necessary, and the incumbent may face traumatic situations, including psychiatric and deceased patients.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. This position is highly active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing throughout the day. The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds.
