The South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs is dedicated to providing comprehensive care for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Key Responsibilities
This role involves delivering nursing services to residents in specific units, ensuring their medical needs are met. In the absence of the Nurse Supervisor, the position is responsible for managing acute medical situations. Duties include administering medications and performing procedures in accordance with established pharmacy and nursing protocols. Active participation in the rehabilitation initiatives for residents is essential. The nurse will also act as the health care coordinator for assigned units, adhering to the Health Care Guidelines.
- Collaborates in the planning and execution of nursing care, assessing individual needs and initiating appropriate interventions as per licensing and certification standards.
- Mentors and develops nursing personnel to guarantee high-quality care and treatment for all residents.
- Evaluates the needs of individuals, recognizing signs of physical or emotional distress, devising and implementing care plans, and assessing their effectiveness. Works closely with a multidisciplinary team to integrate nursing care into the Individual Support Plan (ISP).
- Demonstrates clinical competencies while ensuring a safe and hygienic environment. Provides training and serves as a resource for nursing staff.
- Engages in additional tasks as assigned by the Nurse Supervisor.

Salary Information
The salary for this position ranges from $77,500 to $85,543, based on verified nursing experience as documented in the application. Eligible candidates may receive a sign-on bonus distributed after completing one, six, and twelve months of continuous full-time employment.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited nursing program and licensure as a Registered Nurse by the South Carolina State Board of Nursing are required.
Preferred Skills
Familiarity with nursing techniques and practices, medical terminology, and the ability to adhere to established protocols. Skills in planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care plans are essential. Strong interpersonal skills to maintain trust and cooperation with individuals, along with the ability to prepare educational materials for nursing programs, are preferred. Knowledge of administrative procedures and effective communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary. The ability to respond appropriately to emergencies and work collaboratively as part of a team is crucial. Experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities and the physical capability to assist those who may be aggressive or medically fragile is also required.
