Overview

The role of an Aviation Safety Inspector (Cabin Safety) is crucial in ensuring adherence to safety protocols within the aviation sector.

Eligibility

Key Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of a Cabin Safety Inspector include the formulation, implementation, and enforcement of regulations and standards related to cabin safety practices and operations. This encompasses safety considerations regarding aviation facilities, equipment, and operational procedures. Aviation Safety Inspectors leverage extensive knowledge of the aviation sector, fundamental safety principles, and relevant federal laws, regulations, and policies that govern aviation.

Employment Conditions

  • U.S. Citizenship is mandatory.
  • Selective Service Registration is required for males born after December 31, 1959.
Qualifications

General prerequisites for all roles include:

- No more than two incidents of Federal aviation regulations violations in the past five years;
- A valid State driver's license;
- Proficiency in the English language;
- Absence of chemical dependencies or substance abuse that may hinder job performance;
- A high school diploma or equivalent.

Medical Standards: Candidates must be physically capable of executing the duties of the Aviation Safety Inspector role safely and efficiently, meeting the following criteria:

- Adequate distant vision in each eye and the ability to read printed materials of typewritten size (corrective lenses are acceptable);
- Ability to hear conversational speech (hearing aids permitted);
- No physical conditions that could pose a risk to oneself or others or interfere with the ability to travel as a passenger on various aircraft.

Additionally, candidates for positions requiring aircraft operation must:

- Hold a valid second-class medical certificate in accordance with FAA regulations;
- Successfully complete recurrent medical evaluations as mandated by the FAA.

Applicants not requiring a valid second-class medical certificate who are tentatively selected will need to:

- Provide documentation from a certified physician confirming they meet the minimum medical standards; or

- Those who do not meet the minimum medical standards but are otherwise qualified will undergo an individualized assessment to determine their ability to perform essential job functions.

Specialized Experience Requirements for FG-12 or Equivalent Grade Level/Pay Band:

In addition to meeting the basic requirements, candidates must possess three years of specialized experience in a passenger-carrying multi-engine aircraft exceeding 12,500 pounds gross takeoff weight, which includes experience in the following categories:

a. Comprehensive knowledge of:
  • Cabin Safety policies;
  • Flight attendant duties and responsibilities;
  • Cabin safety operations;
  • FAA regulatory requirements;
  • Emergency procedures and associated training;
  • Passenger handling practices;
  • Emergency and safety equipment in the aircraft cabin.
b. Experience in at least one of the following functions:
  • Conducting emergency procedure training;
  • Developing cabin safety emergency protocols;
  • Creating handbooks, policies, or manuals related to cabin safety technical programs.
c. Experience in at least one of the following areas:
  • Managing flight attendant emergency training or technical cabin safety issues;
  • Developing training manuals and procedures for flight attendants to ensure passenger safety;
  • Applying Federal regulations to air carrier operations in areas such as emergency procedures training, aircraft evacuation, or emergency equipment installation.
Experience Recency: A portion of the specialized experience described above must have been acquired within the last three years.

Educational Background

Candidates must possess a high school diploma or equivalent.

The Flight Standards Service employs a National Centralized Hiring Process for standardized interviewing, screening, and qualification verification of Aviation Safety Inspector candidates.
