Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Systems Engineer to join our team at Hawaiian Electric Company. As a key member of our Operational Technology Division, you will be responsible for providing specialized expertise and technical support for the operation and maintenance of our real-time operation technology systems.

Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate, design, review, analyze, document, implement, and maintain new and upgraded computer systems, databases, programs, and applications for operating, engineering, and maintenance requirements.
  • Research, evaluate, and document technological advances in computer architecture, hardware, and software, and propose necessary improvements to ensure system availability, reliability, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Develop flow charts, block diagrams, and write, test, correct, and document computer programs and operation and maintenance procedures.
  • Maintain physical and cyber security for operation technology systems and department computer applications.
  • Enforce, document, and update established policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Ensure data and program security of department corporate computer applications and hardware.
  • Coordinate information transfer among operation technology systems and corporate computer systems.
  • Provide technological expertise and support in the development of department staff and personnel by training them to maintain and operate operation technology applications.
  • Assist in the training of new Systems Engineers and other department staff.
  • Plan, project manage, document, and perform hardware, operating system, and software product installation, updates, maintenance, and integration into operation and electrical systems.
  • Provide after-hours service to ensure system availability.
  • Investigate and respond to system failures during and outside normal working hours, perform and recommend corrective measures or identify and notify the appropriate party responsible for correcting the problem.
  • Independently and collaboratively with other divisions and personnel, isolate, identify, and resolve problems with system hardware, and help develop specialized test software and procedures as indicated.
  • Submit oral and written reports documenting problem analysis and proposed resolution.
  • Collect and analyze real-time, spot, and recorded system information; investigate, evaluate, and trend system performance; initiate and follow up on corrective actions.
  • Facilitate the acquisition, maintenance, and documentation of technical resources for department personnel.
  • Work with contractors and finalize contracts, maintenance schedules, and documents work/history for specialized equipment.
  • Travel to field sites as required.
  • Provide backup to Lead Systems Engineers.
  • Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree from an accredited engineering school in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent of the degree in appropriate education, or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge in the management of computerized information and control systems, as needed for configuration and support of operating technology systems.
  • Working knowledge of programming languages (C, Python, Perl) and UNIX/Linux scripting (ksh, bash).
  • Thorough knowledge of server, client-server, and workstation PC technologies and system development.
  • Thorough knowledge of data and telecommunications hardware, software, including supported software and network configurations.
  • Working knowledge of various operating systems, including but not limited to Windows, AIX, and Linux.
  • Understanding of constraints and challenges for supporting 24/7 operations.
  • Working knowledge of networking systems and data communications concepts and operation.
  • Working knowledge of RTU protocols and configurations, including DNP3 and Telegyr.
  • Several years (3-5) of experience with data and communications hardware and network installation, administration, and troubleshooting with experience in operating technology systems preferred.
  • Several years (3-4) experience with PC/server hardware and software installation, configuration, and maintenance.
  • BS in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering may be substituted for up to 3 years of experience.
