Overview: Under the supervision of the Fire Officer and/or Fire Academy supervisor, the Firefighter Trainee will engage in a comprehensive Firefighter I training program that adheres to the standards set by the State Board of Fire Services and the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The Trainee's primary responsibility is to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and physical abilities to operate as a certified Firefighter I in California. Successful completion of the training program is mandatory within the designated timeframe.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Participate actively in and complete the approved firefighter academy.
  2. Engage in all academic and physical training activities.
  3. Maintain and care for departmental and academy equipment.
  4. Attend all scheduled training sessions, which may vary in timing.
  5. Complete assigned in-house training.
  6. As a licensed paramedic, provide emergency medical services as required.
  7. Be available for recall during scheduled or emergency situations.
  8. Perform additional related duties as assigned.
  9. During in-house training, assist with various firefighting duties, including:
  • Responding to fires, EMS calls, hazardous material incidents, and rescues.
  • Utilizing equipment to manage emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Maintaining fire apparatus and facilities.
  • Familiarizing oneself with local streets and response routes.
  • Conducting fire safety inspections and educational presentations.

Qualifications:
  • Must be on the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List at the time of application.
  • Cal-JAC CPAT Card must be current.
  • A passing score on the FCTC Written Test is required.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional coursework in paramedicine or fire science is preferred.
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • Valid State of California EMT-P license required at the time of application.
  • One year of full-time experience as a licensed paramedic in California is preferred.
  • Valid California Driver License and a safe driving record are necessary.
  • Must successfully complete the Firefighter I Academy and in-house training.
  • Pass a thorough background investigation and medical evaluation.
  • Compliance with no tobacco use standard is required.
  • Bilingual candidates (English/Spanish) are highly desired.
