Position Overview

The Recovery Room Registered Nurse (RN) plays a vital role in delivering comprehensive patient care by employing the nursing process. This includes thorough data collection, assessment, and prioritization of patient needs, as well as evaluating the effectiveness of nursing interventions. The RN also coordinates educational activities for patients and collaborates with healthcare team members to ensure optimal care delivery.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial and ongoing assessments in collaboration with the interdisciplinary care team, analyzing data to formulate and implement effective care plans.
  • Administer medications safely, adhering to state regulations and Mercy Health policies.
  • Act as the primary contact for patient care coordination across various hospital departments.
  • Champion patient safety by engaging in continuous quality improvement initiatives.
  • Delegate nursing tasks in accordance with legal and regulatory standards, considering the competencies of team members.
  • Manage nursing care during surgical procedures, ensuring the surgical team’s needs are met for successful outcomes.
  • Provide preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care, including patient assessments and discharge instructions.
  • Monitor and evaluate patient conditions throughout the surgical process to ensure optimal recovery.
  • Assist the surgical team by anticipating needs, preparing sterile instruments, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Participate in reprocessing activities if part of the Endoscopy team.

Qualifications

  • Current RN License in the relevant state or compact.
  • BLS certification (preferred upon hire).
  • ACLS and PALS certifications (preferred).
  • CNOR certification (preferred).
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (preferred).
  • Minimum of 2 years of critical care experience (preferred).

Skills and Competencies

  • Ability to assign patient care based on nursing skills and knowledge.
  • Facilitate learning experiences and provide education to nursing staff.
  • Possess clinical knowledge to deliver evidence-based patient care.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients’ clinical and psychosocial needs.
  • Develop and implement effective care plans.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and their families, ensuring understanding of care processes.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and accountability in all actions.

Working Conditions

This role may involve high-stress situations and fluctuating workloads. Nurses may encounter physical altercations, exposure to hazardous materials, and the need for physical restraint in certain circumstances. Adherence to universal precautions and the use of personal protective equipment is mandatory.

Patient Population

The RN will provide care to a diverse patient population, demonstrating knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan. This includes care for neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.
