  • Provides leadership to LPNs, CNAs, and other nursing support staff in patient care.
  • Coordinates various medical services for diagnostics and treatment as directed by the Medical Director, Physician, Physician Assistant, or Nurse Practitioner.
  • Enter housing units to distribute medications or other medical supplies and conduct medical screenings when necessary.
  • Assist in minor medical or surgical procedures.
  • Maintain an updated knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reactions and overdose management.
  • Maintain knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition, implementing them as per orders.
  • Maintain the Problem Oriented Medical Record (POMR).
  • Administer medications, including IV therapy and IM injections, and all other approved routes of administration per the orders of physicians or mid-level providers.
  • Recommend enhancements to procedures, equipment, and supplies to the Supervisor.
  • Notify the supervisor and complete written reports for any medical or security incidents.
  • Respond to medical emergencies involving inmates, staff, or visitors, providing appropriate first aid or triage.
  • Assess the physical, psychological, and psychosocial dimensions of patients within the Health Care Unit and, as necessary, in the housing units.
  • Apply knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases using available resources to obtain health histories and during the assessment process.
  • Summarize assessment data and make triage decisions, documenting and communicating them to other patient care providers.
  • Utilize available treatment protocols as established by the Medical Director.
  • Utilize the referral process to appropriate healthcare providers as necessary.
  • Apply knowledge and utilize available resources in planning care and patient education.
  • Implement an Individual Treatment Program in the Health Care Unit and, as necessary, in the housing units.
  • Execute clinical and technical aspects of care in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Intervene using proper techniques, procedures, and safety precautions, employing aseptic techniques and infection control to meet individual patient needs.
  • Implement medical plans through administering medications in accordance with physician's orders.
  • Document nursing encounters utilizing the Problem Oriented Medical Records format of charting as required by the facility.
  • Communicate information to other nursing staff, Health Care Unit physicians, physician assistants, Health Care Unit supervisory personnel, and correctional officers and departments.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and perform nursing policies and procedures.
  • Support the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the nursing department.
  • Accept staffing assignments and perform other related duties as required or assigned by the designated immediate supervisor. Perform within the normal limits of the State Nurse Practice Act, Code of Ethics for Nurses, policies and procedures, and facility policy/procedures and standards.
  • Promote quality assurance standards by participating in quality chart audits.
  • Develop and maintain professional relationships with patients, visitors, and medical and correctional personnel. Foster good working relationships among staff and between other disciplines and departments.
  • Supervise and strive for excellence in patient care by challenging and, as necessary, correcting errors of peers to ensure the safety and well-being of the patient.
  • Make suggestions for improving work conditions to the Medical Director.
  • Upon receiving the necessary training and/or instruction, perform other duties as required or assigned.
  • Conform to Wexford Health Sources, Inc.
, and facility regulations as appropriate, to include, but not be limited to:

  • The duties and responsibilities outlined herein are for payroll purposes only; Standard medical setting in a correctional facility, which includes daily interfacing with inmates, correctional staff, and health care personnel. Temperature extremes may be encountered while moving throughout the facility outdoors and indoors in buildings without air conditioning.
