Metro Health (now the University of Michigan Health-West) is seeking a dedicated Respiratory Therapist. The Respiratory Therapist RRT is responsible for delivering comprehensive respiratory care services to patients experiencing respiratory function challenges.
Key Responsibilities:
The Respiratory Therapist conducts both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Leveraging their educational background and clinical expertise, they serve as educators, mentors, and consultants for clinical respiratory interventions.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of an accredited Respiratory program
- Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential OR Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC)
- Licensed Respiratory Therapist in the State of Michigan
- BLS certified
- ACLS certification within 6 months of hire
- PALS certification within 6 months of hire for all therapists working inpatient
- NRP certification within 6 months of hire for all therapists working inpatient
Essential Duties:
- Assist with artificial airway management
- Perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, patient assessments, and provide recommendations for respiratory patients
- Monitor pulse oximetry and electrocardiograms, and participate in Rapid Response and Emergency Response Teams
- Provide both invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation support
- Administer humidity and oxygen therapy, bronchial hygiene therapy, breathing exercises, and aerosolized medications
- Collect and analyze blood gas samples to assess oxygen, carbon dioxide, and acid-base balance
- Document procedures in accordance with departmental and hospital policies, including patient education and care plans
- Assist with bronchoscopies and manage bronch cart supplies and patient transports
- Engage in the department's Quality Management Process
- Serve as a clinical instructor for respiratory therapy students
- Attend mandatory meetings and educational programs
- Conduct specialized bedside monitoring
- Specific to Pulmonology RRT: Perform spirometry, lung volume assessments, diffusion capacity tests, and respiratory muscle force evaluations
- Conduct equipment calibration and setup
- Evaluate patient responses to bronchodilators
- Perform 6-Minute Walk Tests (6MWT) and oximetry testing
- Assist with exercise testing and arterial punctures
- Conduct exhaled breath testing (FENO, BH2)
- Undertake additional duties as assigned.
Additional Expectations:
Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of departmental processes, protocols, and procedures, pursue self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participate in committees and task forces as directed by management.
