Public Works and Infrastructure Director

The Prairie Island Indian Community is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Public Works and Infrastructure Director to lead our team in providing exceptional services to our community. As a key member of our leadership team, you will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of Public Works and Infrastructure services, including facilities and grounds services, housing services, utilities, roads, and infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and implement strategic plans for Public Works and Infrastructure services, aligning with the community's vision and mission.
- Oversee and manage existing Housing, Public Works, and Water/Wastewater (Utilities) Departments, ensuring effective operations and compliance with regulations.
- Responsible for the oversight and management of the construction and repair of Tribal roads, sidewalks, rights-of-way, and equipment, ensuring safety and quality standards.
- Administer planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of utilities and Public Works facilities, ensuring efficient and effective use of resources.
- Collaborate with internal departments and external entities to ensure seamless communication and coordination.
- Supervise and assist in the development and implementation of policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulations and community standards.
- Manage division resources, including budgeting and labor expenses, ensuring effective use of resources and achieving community goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Tribal Administrator, ensuring the success of the community's Public Works and Infrastructure services.
- Bachelor's degree in a public works related field, such as engineering, natural resources, or public administration, or equivalent experience.
- At least 10 years of increasingly responsible experience in public works management and administration, with a proven track record of success.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public presentations, and ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality.
- Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), and ability to interpret complex civil engineering documents.
- Ability to work independently and effectively with minimal supervision, and manage employees to maintain a cohesive working environment.
- Sensitive to Native American Culture and ability to pass a drug screen (UA) and criminal background check.
- Valid driver's license and proof of insurability.
- Certifications in water quality and wastewater management and safety.
- Working knowledge of IHS and other standards.
The position requires repetitive use of fingers, hands, and wrists in job-related duties, and the ability to sit for long periods with occasional standing or walking. The work is performed primarily in an office setting, with occasional outdoor activities.
