The Operating Room Technician provides essential surgical support to both direct and indirect patient care. This role involves assisting the surgeon during operative and invasive procedures.

Additionally, the technician serves as a resource for fellow technologists, mentors new staff, and trains students, often taking on an informal leadership role as required.

Utilizing the knowledge gained through certification, the technician will assist colleagues, enhance efficiency, and elevate overall performance.


Qualifications:

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Associate's Degree in Surgical Technology or a Certificate of completion from an accredited Surgical Technology program.
CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS
Certified Surgical Technologist upon hire.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of hire.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Proficient use of standard equipment necessary for the role.
Occasional travel to other facilities may be required.
Must possess a valid driver's license for business-related travel.

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE
Fluent in reading, writing, and speaking English.
Basic computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, and web browsing.
Multicultural sensitivity and critical thinking skills for independent decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:
Preparation for specific surgical procedures that is timely, accurate, effective, and efficient.
Ensuring instruments, equipment, and sutures are appropriate, complete, and functional.

Establishing a sterile field and scrubbing in before the patient enters the operating room. Organizing the surgical setup to facilitate smooth transitions during procedures.

Maintaining awareness of case requirements, including the need for multiple mayo stands.
Collaborating with the surgeon prior to the procedure and making necessary adjustments.
Training surgical techs and RNs in preparation for specific surgical tasks.
Assisting in both simple and complex procedures across various specialties.
Demonstrating confidence and competence during routine and emergency situations.
Anticipating needs and providing support to ensure focus remains on the surgical field.
Maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality at all times.
Mentoring staff and students in surgical planning and execution.
Exhibiting calm and steady behavior during unexpected events and utilizing resources wisely.
Participating in required on-call duties, including after-hours, weekends, and holidays.

Responding promptly when contacted during on-call hours, adhering to departmental policies.

Engaging in effective communication and collaboration with team members, ensuring timely articulation of needs.
Participating in quality improvement initiatives and fostering a positive work environment.
