General Overview

This position entails a high level of responsibility involving patrol, inspection, investigation, and enforcement duties. The individual in this role will be accountable for upholding laws and regulations, maintaining public order, safeguarding lives and property, investigating criminal activities, and apprehending offenders. The role requires sound independent judgment in both emergency and routine circumstances, with most duties performed without direct oversight.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct regular patrols in designated areas, monitoring for and investigating suspicious activities, while maintaining communication with the department.
  • Stay informed on departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures, as well as current criminal activities and legal statutes.
  • Carry out preliminary investigations, gather intelligence, and conduct surveillance, analyzing incidents and collaborating with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Identify suspects, locate credible witnesses, organize line-ups, and review relevant records and images.
  • Provide guidance to crime victims, juveniles, and community members regarding crime prevention and safety resources.
  • Mediate civil disputes and refer involved parties to appropriate social services.
  • Manage traffic flow through enforcement of traffic laws, vehicle inspections, and accident investigations.
  • Plan and execute crime scene investigations, including evidence collection and preservation.
  • Apprehend and detain individuals as necessary.
  • Prepare detailed reports, including arrest and incident documentation, and provide testimony in legal proceedings.
  • Conduct interviews with complainants, witnesses, and suspects as part of investigations.
  • Administer emergency first aid and coordinate assistance for injured individuals.
  • Maintain order at public events and gatherings, addressing any disturbances as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.

Special Requirements:
  1. Must possess a valid driver's license during the background investigation.
  2. Must hold a valid NYS driver's license upon appointment.
  3. Must be at least nineteen years old and not exceed thirty-five years of age at the time of the written examination.
  4. Must be at least twenty years old at the time of appointment.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen at the time of appointment.
  6. Must successfully complete a medical examination and psychological evaluation.
  7. Must adhere to the Rochester Police Department's policies regarding tattoos and body art.
