Role Responsibilities

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible for delivering safe and efficient nursing care tailored to the specific age and needs of patients and their families. This role utilizes the nursing process to help patients achieve, maintain, and restore optimal health.

Key Duties

  • Adheres to the professional standards set forth by the Ohio Board of Nursing.
  • Completes and submits necessary documentation accurately.
  • Provides relationship-based nursing care that is effective and compassionate.
  • Exhibits technical proficiency in care delivery, ensuring safe practices and positive patient outcomes.

General Requirements

  • Performs additional duties as assigned.
  • Complies with all organizational policies and standards.
  • For specific responsibilities, refer to the documentation provided during orientation.
  • Must adhere to all regulations regarding the secure handling of Protected Health Information (PHI). Annual training and adherence to the UH Code of Conduct and policies are mandatory.
QualificationsEducation
  • Completion of an accredited practical nursing program or current enrollment in a nursing program is required.
Experience
  • A minimum of 2 years of nursing experience is required for Level II positions.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Understanding of the LPN scope of practice as defined by the Ohio Board of Nursing is essential.
  • Ability to utilize various technical equipment to meet patient needs and deliver prescribed clinical therapies (e.g., stethoscopes, thermometers, sphygmomanometers, and electronic monitoring devices).
  • For Level II positions: 18 Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) credits annually, including 3 in clinical specialty and at least 5 in leadership.
  • For Level II positions: Participation in 3 peer reviews and committee involvement, with evidence of 5 criteria.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Must possess a valid Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license in the State of Ohio.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
Additional Certifications
  • IV certification may be required depending on the unit.
Physical Requirements
  • Frequent standing, walking, and lifting (up to 50 lbs).
  • Occasional climbing and balancing.
  • Constant communication and sensory engagement, including talking, hearing, and hand-eye coordination.
