Role Overview:
The Office of Safety and Security is a pivotal department dedicated to collaborating with school leaders and CPS personnel to ensure that all educational environments are safe for our students.

Position Summary:
Reporting to the Network Safety Support Manager, the Central Office Security Specialist executes essential security duties to safeguard property and ensure the safety of Central Office personnel. This role involves monitoring building access and addressing incidents as necessary, escalating matters when appropriate.

Key Responsibilities:
The Central Office Security Specialist will be accountable for the following tasks:

  • Oversee access control for personnel and visitors entering CPS Office Buildings, utilizing security screening systems to ensure the safety of the premises and direct visitors to their designated areas.
  • Exhibit the highest standards of professionalism and customer service to employees, vendors, and guests by welcoming them in a friendly and courteous manner.
  • Enhance the organization’s stability and reputation by adhering to legal standards, Board policies, CPS Office of Safety and Security Accountability protocols, and departmental best practices.
  • Ensure a secure environment by monitoring and managing building and equipment controls.
  • Protect premises and personnel through property patrols, surveillance monitoring, and inspections of buildings, equipment, and access points.
  • Complete preventive maintenance tasks to ensure equipment functionality according to manufacturer guidelines, troubleshoot equipment issues, and request repairs as needed; report irregularities to prevent losses and damages.
  • Inform individuals of policies and procedures; notify appropriate supervisors or authorities regarding trespassers, and document incidents promptly, capturing relevant details and participant information.
  • Guide personnel and visitors during emergencies.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the front desk and surrounding areas.
  • Manage lobby activities during large events and meetings to ensure a seamless flow of guests while maintaining normal business operations and the safety of visitors and staff.
  • Engage in professional development training to enhance knowledge and skills.

Qualifications:
To excel in this role, the Central Office Security Specialist should possess the following qualifications:

  • Education:
    High school diploma or GED equivalent; a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Experience:
    A minimum of two (2) years of successful security experience; familiarity with technology systems, including Google applications, Verify, and surveillance monitoring systems such as Genetec, Rapid Eye, and CCTV.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Basic understanding of school operational processes and methods for providing site security and safety.
  • A consistently positive demeanor that aligns with the Board of Education's image.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, Excel, Google applications, and surveillance monitoring software.

  • Sound judgment and knowledge of ethical practices.
  • Problem-solving capabilities; the ability to make decisions and act, particularly in emergencies.
  • Strong oral communication skills, interpersonal skills, and a team-oriented approach.

Employment Conditions:
As a condition of employment with Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to:

  • Establish and maintain residency within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of their CPS hire date and uphold residency throughout their employment with the district.
  • Be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, unless approved for a medical or religious exemption, and submit proof of vaccination to the district within 30 days of hire.
