Job Description and Duties

As a Caltrans Equipment Operator II, you will be responsible for operating snow removal equipment, including trucks with plows and sanders, motor graders, loaders, and rotary snow blowers. You will also be responsible for manning chain control and road closures, directing traffic, and placing warning/detour signs. Additionally, you will assist in all aspects of slide removal, both manual and mechanical. You will operate Category 1 & 2 equipment assigned to the Unit, including passenger vehicles, mini to 3/4-ton pickups, vans, and 3/4-ton utility bodies, as well as construction equipment such as mowers, graders, tractors, loaders, excavators, backhoes, and fork lifts. You will also operate snow removal specialty equipment, including plows, plows with wings, and blowers. Your assignments will include paving, sign/fence/guardrail repair, culvert cleaning, removing litter, roadside rest area maintenance, and other duties typically assigned to a Highway Maintenance Worker or Landscape Maintenance Worker. You will also be responsible for irrigation repair, chemical spraying, and landscape duties. Equipment Care: You will be responsible for servicing, minor adjustments, emergency repairs, cleaning of equipment, and completing all pertinent records of equipment. Special Projects: You will work on special projects, such as assisting in blasting operations, using rock drills and jackhammers, fabricating tire chains, and setting up emergency traffic controls for accidents and hazardous spills.

Working Conditions
Position located in Nevada County. Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment. You will be required to work in a wide range of sometimes extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to –15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, and snow. During the winter months, the workweek is normally 5/8-hour days. During the summer months, the workweeks may be changed to 4/40-hour days. The scheduling of the 5/8 days or the 4/40 days is at the discretion of the District Management. You may be scheduled to work the night shift as scheduled by the Maintenance Supervisor. You may be required to work overtime due to storms, emergencies, special work projects, or when the Supervisor deems it in the best interest of the State to work overtime.

Eligibility for Hire
Eligibility for hire may be determined by your score on the Caltrans Equipment Operator II exam. For those who do not have current eligibility (e.g., transfer, permissive reinstatement, or voluntary demotions) and/or who will be new to state civil services employment, you must be on the state examination list to be eligible for these positions.   • Occasional travel may be required. Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state-owned or leased vehicle.
