Newborn ICU Respiratory Therapist

Job Summary:
UAB Medicine is seeking a highly skilled Respiratory Therapist to join our team in the Regional Newborn ICU. As a Respiratory Therapist, you will be responsible for evaluating and administering therapeutic and diagnostic respiratory care and life support to patients with breathing or other cardiopulmonary disorders.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provides therapeutic modalities to treat and prevent respiratory-related conditions.
- Conducts patient assessments and evaluations, including diagnostic testing and conducting limited physical examinations.
- Follows established policies and procedures when administering therapeutic modalities as prescribed by the physician.
- Initiates and monitors invasive and noninvasive positive pressure mechanical ventilation and the use of weaning protocols in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives, including critical value and result reporting, patient education, and proper documentation procedures.
- Performs arterial punctures using radial, brachial, and femoral sites, and draws off arterial lines to obtain samples for blood gas analysis in accordance with hospital policies and procedures.
Requirements:
- Graduate from an accredited School of Respiratory Therapy.
- Currently registered as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) and licensed or eligible to be licensed as a Licensed Respiratory Therapist (LRT) with the Alabama State Board of Respiratory Therapy (ASBRT).
- Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) is required or should be obtained within 30 days of employment.
- Depending on the unit/department, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) may be required.
