City Judge

The City Judge is responsible for presiding over various hearings, including initial appearances, criminal misdemeanor and traffic arraignments, criminal jury and non-jury trials, protective order hearings, pretrial conferences, and motion hearings. This role requires strong legal knowledge, excellent communication skills, and the ability to make sound judgments.

• Preside over hearings and make informed decisions
• Review motions and issue orders
• Conduct ex-parte interviews and prepare orders
• Review search warrants and sign or reject them
• Review and sign summons, subpoenas, arrest warrants, and other court orders
• Perform legal research and provide recommendations
• Develop and implement performance plans for court staff
• Exercise original jurisdiction over criminal proceedings and civil actions
• Prepare the city court's annual budget and administer it
• Perform other duties as assigned

• Education and experience as prescribed by the City Council
• Ability to sit for long periods of time
• Completion of New Judge Orientation (NJO) within 1 year of appointment
• Arizona Committee on Judicial Education and Training (COJET) accreditation
• Knowledge of Arizona Code of Judicial Conduct, Arizona Rules of Court, state statutes, city ordinances, and applicable case law
• Skills in using automated case management systems and presiding over courtroom hearings
