POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision, the Respiratory Therapist performs skilled respiratory therapy tasks of moderate complexity in administering treatments to patients as prescribed by a physician. This role may involve instructing others on the proper use and maintenance of respiratory equipment and related duties as necessary.

This position represents the journey level within the Respiratory Care Practitioner series. An individual in this role is accountable for the proficient delivery of respiratory therapy and treatments to patients. Responsibilities may include training others, leading a team, or providing guidance to less experienced staff.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

License/Certificate:
Possession of a valid Respiratory Care Practitioner license issued by the State of California Respiratory Care Board. Current BLS certification is required, with ACLS and PALS certifications to be obtained within six months of employment.

Key Abilities:
- Administer a variety of skilled respiratory therapy treatments and modalities.
- Maintain and perform minor repairs on respiratory therapy equipment, adjusting it to meet individual patient needs.
- Assist in educating patients and their families.
- Keep accurate records and prepare necessary reports.
- Follow both oral and written instructions effectively.
- Establish and maintain productive working relationships with patients, physicians, co-workers, and others.
- Train and lead other staff members.

Physical/Mental Requirements:
Mobility: Frequent operation of a keyboard, standing for extended periods, walking, pushing/pulling, and bending/squatting; occasional sitting for long durations, operating heavy equipment, running, and climbing stairs.
Frequency of Lifting: Frequent lifting of 5 to 30 lbs.; occasional lifting of 30 to 70 lbs., and restraining or lifting heavy objects or individuals.
Visual Requirements: Constant use of overall vision, color perception, eye/hand coordination, and depth perception; frequent reading and close-up work.
Dexterity: Frequent holding, reaching, grasping, repetitive motion, and writing.
Hearing/Talking: Frequent hearing of normal speech, telephone/radio communication, and in-person conversations.
Emotional/Psychological: Constant public interaction and concentration; frequent exposure to emergency situations, trauma, grief, or death, requiring decision-making and working during weekends/nights; occasional exposure to hazardous materials, working alone, and overtime/travel.
Environmental Conditions: Frequent exposure to noise; occasional exposure to dirt, dust, smoke, fumes, poor ventilation, indoor cold/heat, and hazardous materials.

TYPICAL DUTIES

  • Set up and operate respiratory equipment and apparatus in the administration of respiratory therapy treatments as prescribed by a physician.
  • Operate blood gas analysis equipment and report findings.
  • Conduct rounds to check and make necessary adjustments to respiratory therapy equipment in use or on standby in patient areas; clean, assemble, maintain, and repair equipment as required.
  • Set up and maintain long-term ventilators.
  • Perform screening pulmonary function tests.
  • Assist the cardiac arrest team, when necessary, by supplying oxygen, performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or securing and maintaining respiratory equipment.
  • Review patients' charts and verify transcribed orders against those of the physician.
  • May act as a lead worker; adjust assignments based on patient census and staff availability, review the work of others, and train staff as assigned.
