Position: Physician - General Internal Medicine (Primary Care)
Location: California

This role qualifies for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), which provides reimbursement for student loan payments. Candidates must meet specific eligibility criteria as per VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of their appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000), and eligibility duration (one to five years) will be determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office following a thorough review of the EDRP application.
Basic Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not feasible to recruit qualified citizens in line with VA Policy.
- Medical Degree: Must possess a Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an accredited institution.
- Licensure: Must hold a current, unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, or Commonwealth, or in the District of Columbia.
- Residency Training: Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs is required.
- Language Proficiency: Must demonstrate proficiency in both spoken and written English.
- Board Certification: Board certification or eligibility in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine is necessary.
Preferred Experience: Significant background in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine is preferred. Proven ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to establish productive interpersonal relationships with all levels of healthcare personnel.
Physical Requirements: Candidates must meet the physical standards for the position. A physical examination prior to placement is mandatory. This position is subject to drug testing. Responsibilities include lifting 15-44 pounds, pushing for approximately 2 hours, reaching above shoulder height, using fingers and both hands, walking and standing for 3-5 hours, and kneeling. Candidates must demonstrate the ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct assessments and provide care for new and returning patients with a variety of medical conditions.
- Order necessary diagnostics, consultations, medications, and other therapies as clinically indicated.
- Address preventative health maintenance needs.
- Complete all required documentation in the VA computer system, including clinical reminders and screenings, in a timely manner.
- Perform evaluations, including history and physical examinations; diagnosis; consultations; and treatment of adult patients.
- Supervise residents, fellows, and other trainees.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
