Job Title: Active Sonar Transducer Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Active Sonar Transducer Engineer to join our team at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL). As a member of our team, you will contribute to the development of groundbreaking new active sonar technologies used for US homeland security.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and test novel active sonar systems incorporating new technologies to exploit the ocean acoustic environment.
  • Design and select transduction devices, sonar system design, and concept of operation development.
  • Operate and test high-powered acoustic sources for underwater applications.
  • Analyze and assess the performance of existing and proposed active sonar systems by comparing real-world and experimental signal processing results with model predictions.
  • Develop new performance models and design prototypes and new applications.
  • Collaborate with government partners and teammates to create new concepts for sonar systems.
  • Craft reports and presentations to communicate results to team members and government partners.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Ocean Engineering, Material Science, or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years of experience working with transducers, acoustics, and developing sonar systems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Ability to travel occasionally to attend meetings and participate in field tests.
  • Comfortable working in closed area facilities.
  • Ability to obtain a Secret level security clearance.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree, e.g., MS or PhD, or equivalent experience in ocean acoustics.
  • Experience with high-power active sonar systems.
  • At-sea field test experience.
  • Experience with advanced manufacturing techniques, including additive manufacturing.
