Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement a strategic editorial plan that aligns with our mission and values
  • Collaborate with our news team to identify and develop story ideas that cover issues surrounding democracy and civic engagement
  • Assign and edit news stories, ensuring that they meet our high standards of quality and accuracy
  • Work closely with our digital team to develop engaging online content that promotes our reporting and builds our audience
  • Represent our organization at public meetings and events, promoting our mission and values
  • Participate in fundraising and audience engagement events to build support for our work
Requirements
  • 4+ years of experience in a newsroom environment, with a focus on editorial leadership and management
  • Proven track record of developing and implementing successful editorial strategies
  • Excellent writing, editing, and communication skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a team to achieve shared goals
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and deadlines
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in a newsroom environment, with a focus on editorial leadership and management
  • Daily digital, broadcast news, broadcast news magazine, public affairs program, or podcast experience
  • Project management skills, including successful prioritization of short- and long-term planning
  • A spirit of experimentation and learner's mindset
  • An appreciation of the journalism on all KPBS platforms
  • Broad knowledge of current San Diego regional issues
  • Ability to place issues in a national, state, or international context
  • Audio and/or video recording and editing experience
  • Experience working in public media
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Cultural competencies; an awareness that your own worldview is one of many
