Position Summary

The Clinical Oncology Nurse Specialist embodies the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine, adheres to the organization's ethical standards, and complies with all relevant policies and regulations. The Clinical Oncology Nurse Specialist is responsible for coordinating comprehensive care through the nursing process.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate and reassess patients and their families to identify ongoing care requirements, utilizing knowledge of high-risk criteria and initiating timely referrals to appropriate resources.
  • For new patients, gather and analyze data, coordinate necessary multidisciplinary care, and manage appointment scheduling effectively.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, physicians, and support staff to coordinate new patient intake for multidisciplinary clinics, contributing to the development of a comprehensive care plan.
  • Serve as a resource for non-clinical staff regarding inquiries from prospective patients.
  • Articulate the rationale behind clinical decisions through critical thinking.
  • Deliver patient care in a manner that prioritizes safety and minimizes the risk of healthcare errors.
  • Identify educational needs, preferences, and readiness for learning; assess support systems and barriers, making referrals as necessary.
  • Provide education to patients, families, and caregivers about diagnoses, treatment processes, therapies, and testing.
  • Assist with transitions of care and provider changes.
  • Communicate effectively and collaborate with team members, demonstrating respect for various clinical disciplines.
  • Delegate tasks appropriately to other care providers to ensure timely patient care.
  • Foster a positive work environment.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to personal and professional development beyond standard educational requirements.
  • Welcome new employees and team members, aiding in their growth and learning.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills reflective of current nursing practices through ongoing education and training.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Completion of an accredited Registered Nurse program with an active RN License in Illinois.
  • Recent nursing experience within the last five years.
  • BLS Certification.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Oncology Certified Nurse credential.
