Position Summary
The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is responsible for orchestrating all physical and leisure activities within the program, encompassing a variety of indoor, outdoor, and off-site experiences.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement a recreation program that includes music, dance, arts and crafts, cultural activities, swimming, social events, and games.
- Link the skills acquired through activities to real-world competencies that will assist the youth in their transition from the program.
- Provide valuable insights regarding youth engagement in recreational activities, their participation in group settings, and their emotional and physical reactions to these activities.
- Tailor recreational services to meet the individual needs of youth in collaboration with treatment staff.
- Contribute to the treatment plan by establishing specific objectives and interventions related to recreational activities.
- Instruct coping strategies and stress management techniques.
- Oversee youth activities as necessary.
- Communicate and coordinate with organizations and individuals interested in sponsorship opportunities.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director to engage external vendors as required.
- Research, select, and maintain suitable materials, equipment, and resources, ensuring accurate administrative records.
- Comply with all contractual and state educational standards and Quality Improvement protocols.
- Administer first aid and CPR during emergencies in line with national guidelines.
- Actively engage in day trips and special events that involve recreational sports, facility maintenance, and equipment management.
- Assist with special projects and other assigned responsibilities.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy or a related field such as recreation, leisure studies, or physical education, including internship or practicum experience.
- A minimum of one (1) year of relevant experience working with youth in a residential setting; two (2) years preferred.
- Certification as a recreational therapist is advantageous.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work autonomously.
- Experience with at-risk youth is a plus.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Maintain appropriate crisis intervention and physical restraint training and certification as per state regulations.
- Obtain and sustain current CPR and First Aid Certification from a nationally recognized organization.
