Position Overview: The Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Instructor at Houston Methodist Hospital plays a pivotal role in shaping the educational framework for our CPE programs. This position involves collaborating with management to design and execute curriculum for four distinct CPE programs, as well as facilitating and instructing CPE courses to ensure compliance with accreditation standards set by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (ACPE).
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical oversight to CPE students, including Residents, Interns, and Student Educators, as they deliver spiritual care to fulfill the emotional, spiritual, and religious needs of patients, families, and staff.
- Support leadership in advancing the mission, vision, and values of Houston Methodist, engaging in various initiatives to promote these objectives.
- Foster a collaborative and dynamic work environment that drives optimal outcomes.
- Conduct both group and individual supervision and mentoring for CPE students during their spiritual care activities, including patient rounds, discharge planning, and participation in support groups.
- Coordinate 24-hour on-call coverage by CPE students to ensure balanced spiritual care availability while enhancing the learning experience.
- Assist in the strategic planning and execution of departmental services in partnership with fellow team members.
Quality and Safety Functions:
- Educate and mentor students pursuing ACPE certification, overseeing their performance in fulfilling certification requirements.
- Collaborate with physicians and hospital leadership to evaluate the quality and safety of services rendered by CPE students, identifying areas for improvement and recommending corrective actions.
- Demonstrate efficient time management and responsible financial stewardship while actively supporting team members.
- Engage in special projects and participate in various hospital committees as needed.
Professional Development: Seek opportunities to enhance facilitation, teaching, and leadership skills, focusing on continuous improvement.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in theological studies from an accredited institution or equivalent as recognized by relevant professional associations.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing, to ensure patient and employee safety.
- Proficient in utilizing computer systems for maintaining patient documentation.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision while contributing to problem-solving efforts.
- Professional handling of confidential and sensitive information.
Travel Requirements: May involve travel within the Houston Metropolitan area.
