Job Summary

This position conducts comprehensive investigations, testing, and sampling to identify, evaluate, control, and anticipate employee exposure to environmental factors resulting from chemical, physical, ergonomic, and biological hazards. The incumbent will provide professional and technical industrial hygiene services and guidance on safety and health matters to the Arizona Department of Administration management and employees statewide.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage and maintain various industrial hygiene programs, including hearing conservation, control of hazardous energy, exposure control, respirator protection, AED, and confined space entry programs.
  • Conduct industrial hygiene inspections and testing to address workplace health issues throughout the state, including indoor and outdoor air monitoring, noise metering, and sampling of surfaces for potential harmful substances.
  • Answer technical questions, interpret regulations, consult with management, employees, and external customers on safety and health issues and concerns.
  • Advise management and employees on the need for safety and health protective equipment based on work environments and established regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain the Safety Clothing catalog and participate in the incident review process.
  • Perform ergonomic assessments on employee workstations to decrease fatigue and repetitive use injuries.
  • Attend and participate in safety meetings to communicate and solicit safety ideas and/or concerns.
  • Develop, maintain, and present safety training and demonstrate safe work techniques to employees.
  • Service and maintain industrial hygiene testing equipment and safely operate state vehicle and state-owned equipment.
Requirements
  • Comprehensive knowledge of industrial hygiene principles, practices, and hazards, including their related toxicological effects and implications and means of abatement.
  • Knowledge of federal and state statutes, such as Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)/Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act (AHERA).
  • Knowledge of methods, procedures, and techniques used in collecting and testing samples, such as asbestos, dust, mold, mists, fumes, vapors, noise, radiation, hazardous waste, and biological agents.
  • Knowledge and understanding of agency policies, rules, and procedures related to safe performance of ADOT activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Industrial Hygienist.
  • Four years of industrial hygiene experience in the public or private sector.
  • One year of specialized education in safety or a related field may count for one year of experience.
