Powell 5 is a specialized 25-bed unit dedicated to Neurosurgery, Trauma, and Orthopedics, catering to both inpatient and short-term observation patients. This unit plays a vital role in the Level 1 Trauma program and has earned The Blue Distinction for excellence in care for total hip and total knee replacements. Our dedicated team is focused on a multidisciplinary approach to patient-centered care, aiming for optimal patient outcomes and safe discharge plans.

As a crucial member of the Acute Care team, the LPN operates under the supervision of the Registered Nurse, assisting patients while fostering a therapeutic environment for both patients and their families. The role emphasizes teamwork to deliver high-quality patient care and satisfaction through evidence-based practices. The LPN maintains a practice environment that aligns with the ANA Code for Nurses and the Philosophy of Nursing at UnityPoint Health.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Excellence & Patient Care

  • Demonstrates the necessary knowledge and clinical skills to care for individuals with physical disabilities and chronic illnesses.
  • Delivers hands-on nursing care utilizing the nursing process to achieve quality patient outcomes.
  • Reinforces care provided by other team members.
  • Supervises unlicensed assistive personnel, demonstrating appropriate clinical judgment and delegation.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, families, and healthcare team members to ensure legal documentation and reimbursement requirements are met.
  • Contributes to assessing the physical, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual needs of patients and their families.
  • Collaborates with the healthcare team to ensure optimal recovery opportunities for patients.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Successful completion of a licensed practical nurse program from an accredited institution.
  • Current licensure in good standing as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Iowa.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain within three months of hire.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Fluent in English, with strong reading, writing, and comprehension skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and basic computer skills.
  • Exhibits critical thinking skills and independent judgment in decision-making.
