The Nursing Professional Development Consultant is a registered nurse with specialized knowledge in nursing education, playing a pivotal role in enhancing the professional competence and growth of nurses across various environments.

This consultant promotes lifelong learning within a setting that encourages continuous education for nurses and other healthcare professionals. The NPD Consultant cultivates a supportive atmosphere for learning and facilitates the adult learning experience.

By collaborating with nursing leadership, the NPD Consultant contributes to the delivery of high-quality patient care by ensuring the clinical proficiency of nursing personnel.

They follow a structured approach to design, execute, and assess professional development initiatives that align with the organization's strategies and objectives.

The consultant documents and communicates findings effectively.

They are responsible for creating and implementing high-quality, cost-efficient educational programs that are evidence-based, adhere to care standards, and comply with organizational policies and procedures.

Materials and educational processes are developed based on adult learning principles, considering the novice-to-expert framework for skill enhancement and knowledge acquisition.

The effectiveness of professional development programs is evaluated through monitoring goal achievement, stakeholder satisfaction, and cost efficiency. The consultant utilizes evaluation outcomes to inform future program planning and services.

Program Management:

In partnership with nursing leadership, the consultant develops an evidence-based orientation, training, and competency assessment program for newly hired, transferring, and existing staff.

They reference regulatory standards, scope and standards of practice, job descriptions, organizational policies, and professional recommendations to curate content for competency assessments.

Collaborating with nursing leadership, they also develop and implement an annual competency assessment program, analyzing data to identify competence gaps within individuals or groups.

They pinpoint high-risk, problematic, or newly introduced equipment/processes that require attention. Nursing management determines staff competence, while the NPD Consultant provides feedback on competency evaluations to both the individual and nursing leadership.


Leader/Change Agent:
The consultant comprehends healthcare challenges and systematically evaluates change initiatives. They distinguish between performance/system issues and developmental needs. Demonstrating leadership at a professional level, they maintain necessary competencies and engage in community, state, and national activities. They keep abreast of the Joint Commission, OSHA, and other regulatory standards.
The consultant maintains clinical expertise through self-assessment, peer reviews, and ongoing education. They pursue certification in Nursing Professional Development and clinical specialty practice.
A minimum of two (2) years of educational experience is required.
Education:
~ Bachelor’s degree in nursing.

License, Certification, Registration:
~ Registered Nurse License (in the state where care is provided)

~ Minimum five (5) years of educational experience.
Minimum five (5) years of clinical experience in an acute care setting.
Certification in specialty practice (Nursing Professional Development and/or clinical specialty).
Master’s degree in nursing with a focus on clinical specialty.
