About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Machinist to join our team at United Safety and Survivability Corporation. As a Machinist, you will be responsible for operating a variety of machines to perform assigned tasks, including the operation of our Laser. You will produce and repair precision parts using both manual and automated equipment and accurate measurements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Operate and understand laser computer software, including Trumpf/Meta Cam/SolidWorks, and operate the Trumpf Tube Laser.
  • Operate hoist and manual pallet jack.
  • Provide knowledge and ability to problem solve cutting condition issues and their effect on the parts being produced.
  • Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products and determine product dimensions and tolerances.
  • Select the appropriate tools, machines, and materials to be used in preparation of machinery work.
  • Execute proper startup and shut down of the machines.
  • Lay out, measure, and mark metal stock in order to display placement of cuts.
  • Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and venire calipers.
  • Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
  • Measure, examine, and test completed units in order to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications, using precision instruments such as micrometers.
  • Set up, adjust, and operate all of the basic machine tools and many specialized or advanced variation tools in order to perform precision machining operations.
  • Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines.
  • Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment in order to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine need for adjustments or repairs.
  • Check work pieces to ensure that they are properly lubricated and cooled.
  • Clean and lubricate machines, tools, and equipment in order to remove grease, rust, stains, and foreign matter.
  • Install repaired parts into equipment, or install new equipment.
  • Maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
  • Understand that team members need to pitch in, in other areas, as needed to help meet our goals.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Maintain quality standards and schedules.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent; or at least 3 years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experiences.
  • 3+ years of experience as a Machinist/CNC Laser Operator/Set Up.
  • Experience in using manual, semi-automated or automated tools and machines (lathes, grinders etc.).
  • Basic familiarity with Media Mation/SolidWorks.
  • Experience with machining metals is a must.
  • Able to read, interpret and work from technical drawings.
  • Capable of manual machining methods such as vertical milling, turning and precision grinding preferred; tool making skills may also apply.
  • Able to use precision tools (e.g. calipers) to take accurate measurements.
  • Knowledge of the properties of metal and other material.
  • Skilled at performing basic shop math calculations (adding, subtracting, dividing, multiplying, measuring and converting decimals).
  • Previous experience in a manufacturing organization; low volume/high mix a plus.
  • Previous knowledge of raw materials.
  • Able to lift up to 50lbs and stand for up to 10 to 12 hours per day if necessary.
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including accurate spelling, punctuation, and grammar for producing error-free letters, reports, and decision-making documents. Demonstrates outstanding tact and diplomacy for effective customer service, conflict management, and relationship building with internal and external contacts.
  • Able to perform in a fast-paced, team environment, under pressure, while adapting to change favorably and quickly.
