Law Enforcement Officer

The Tennessee Board of Regents is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Law Enforcement Officer to join our team. As a key member of our security team, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, and staff on our campus.
Key Responsibilities- Enforce state, local, and federal laws, as well as college policies and procedures.
- Provide security and enforcement services to promote and maintain a safe campus.
- Perform foot and vehicle patrols to monitor behavior, secure buildings and property, and maintain order during events.
- Respond to emergency calls and alarms, and assist in determining the cause or origin of an emergency.
- Investigate criminal offenses, traffic accidents, injury reports, and other reported situations.
- Make arrests and assist in the prosecution of violators of the law.
- Enforce traffic and parking regulations.
- Assist students, faculty, and other campus visitors with questions, directions, and other activities.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Graduate of an accredited, approved police academy and certified police officer meeting all the requirements for P.O.S.T certification in Tennessee.
- Meet the requirements of TCA and TCA Qualifications of Police Officers.
- Prior law enforcement experience as a full-time certified officer within the past three years.
- Must attend and successfully complete, annually, a department authorized and P.O.S.T approved in-service training course consisting of forty hours of instruction.
- Must have not been convicted of or pleaded guilty to or entered a plea of nolo contendere to any felony charge or to any violation of any federal or state laws or city ordinances relating to force, violence, theft, dishonesty, gambling, liquor or controlled substances.
- Possess a valid Tennessee driver's license.
- Have good moral character as determined by a thorough investigation conducted by the employing agency; and/or the POST Commission.
- Pass a medical examination including vision screening and drug testing.
- Pass a psychological evaluation.
- Must successfully complete the department field training program within designated time frame.
- Proficiency in firearms and non-lethal weapon operation.
- Associates degree in Criminal Justice or related field.
- Three years of law enforcement experience.
- Substantial judgment and independent initiative.
- Ability to practice effective communication techniques both orally and in writing.
- Work involves frequent departmental or public interaction requiring professionalism, tactfulness, fairness, and decisiveness.
- Demonstrate self-restraint in challenging and/or difficult situations, utilizing excellent customer service skills.
- Possess the ability to work in a multi-cultural setting.
- Demonstrate problem solving skills.
- Ability to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations and to determine proper course of action.
- Ability to ascertain facts by personal conduct, observation, and the evaluation of records.
- Ability to explain and interpret pertinent provisions of laws, ordinances, and regulations.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality in working with sensitive information.
- Ability to handle multiple, simultaneous responsibilities in oftentimes stressful situations.
- Ability to operate modern office equipment, including computer equipment.
- Ability to meet written department directives.
This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, and some heavy work requiring the exertion of 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, running, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and feeling; Ability to escalate physical exertion from minimum to maximum instantaneously when necessary to subdue/restrain individual.
Vocal communication is required for conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devises, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work and observing general surroundings and activities.
Work EnvironmentThe worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, hazards, and atmospheric conditions.
The worker may be exposed to blood-borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protection equipment.
