Mammography Technologist Job Description

At Mercy Health System, we are seeking a highly skilled Mammography Technologist to join our team. As a Mammography Technologist, you will be responsible for operating radiologic equipment and performing mammography procedures to assist physicians in the diagnosis of disease.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform breast imaging procedures, including mammography and breast density measurements.
  • Corroborate patient clinical history with procedure, ensuring information is documented and available for use by the radiologist.
  • Prepare patients for procedures, providing instruction to obtain desired results, gain cooperation, and minimize anxiety.
  • Select and operate imaging equipment, image capture devices, and accessory devices to successfully perform procedures.
  • Position patients to best demonstrate anatomic areas of interest, respecting patient ability and comfort.
  • Immobilize patients as required for appropriate examinations, explaining the need for breast compression during mammography.
  • Determine exposure factors and apply principles of radiation protection to minimize exposure to patients, self, and others.
  • Evaluate images for technical quality, ensuring proper identification is recorded.
  • Use radiology information systems, including PACS, to complete all required records and reports, and submit images for physician review and interpretation.
  • Assume responsibility for the provision of physical and psychological needs of patients during procedures.
  • Verify informed consent for interventional procedures as required.
  • Assist radiologists and physicians during procedures, perform breast specimen radiography as assigned, and practice aseptic technique as necessary.
  • Initiate basic life support action when necessary and provide patient education.
  • Provide input for supply and equipment decisions, maintain control of inventory and supplies, and assume responsibility for assigned areas.
  • Provide practical instruction for students and partners, observe universal protocol, standard precautions, and appropriate patient identifiers, and apply principles of patient safety during all aspects of radiographic and mammographic procedures.
  • Prepare schedules, obtain and review previous mammograms, make follow-up calls, and perform other tasks as assigned.
  • Complete forms and maintain records, logs, and reports of work performed in accordance with MQSA.

Education and Experience:

Graduate of an accredited radiography program, radiographer experience preferred, mammographer experience preferred.

Certification and Licensure:

ARRT Radiography registration required, ARRT Mammography certification required or must be obtained within two years of hire, IEMA-DNS radiography accreditation required if working in Illinois, WI-DSPS radiographer license required if working in Wisconsin, approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days.

Skills and Abilities:

Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos, ability to write simple correspondence, ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form, ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Computer Skills: To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Internet software, order processing systems, and Word Processing software.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
