About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Diesel Mechanic II to join our team at Walters Recycling and Refuse, Inc. as a Fleet Maintenance Specialist. As a key member of our maintenance team, you will be responsible for ensuring the reliability and efficiency of our fleet of diesel and compressed natural gas (CNG) waste collection vehicles and equipment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine maintenance and repairs on diesel and CNG powered trucks and equipment, including preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair complex mechanical and electrical systems, including air and hydraulic braking systems, engine repair and maintenance, and suspension, drivetrain, and steering systems.
  • Use vehicle computer electronics systems to interpret failure modes and initiate or assign repairs.
  • Meet or exceed mechanic productivity goals and schedule compliance goals.
  • Perform test drives and service calls for emergency breakdowns as needed.
  • Ability to learn and operate fleet maintenance software and diagnostic equipment.
  • Chassis component repair and maintenance on a variety of chassis throughout the fleet.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair Refuse bodies, including controls, hydraulic, and electrical systems.
Requirements
  • 2-year technical degree and 10+ years of experience in related industry, or 15 years of experience including but not limited to:
  • Air Brake systems
  • Engine diagnostics and repairs
  • Troubleshooting electrical issues
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Suspension
  • Advanced repairs
  • Familiarity with computer diagnostic equipment and procedures
  • Ability to visually diagnose mechanical issues.
  • Ability to read service and repair manuals.
  • Ability to read work orders.
  • Familiarity with a CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Software)
  • Certifications from Kenworth, Freightliner, Peterbilt, Allison Transmission, Detroit Diesel, Cummins, etc.
  • Meets or exceeds estimate repair times.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Cummins Insite Familiarization.
  • Computerized diagnostic training (JPRO or similar)
  • ACX overview webinar. (AUTOCAR Training)
  • NGVI - Compressed Natural Gas Vehicle - Fuel system inspector training
  • Advanced training and experience in Hydraulic Systems
Physical Requirements
  • Lifting to 50 lbs. Motor coordination with finger dexterity, exposure to chemicals, and physical environment with dirt, odors, noise, and weather extremes.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen, and physical assessment.
  • This is a safety-sensitive position and is subject to random drug screening.
