ROLE SUMMARY:

The Estimating Manager will lead a team of professionals responsible for estimating utility-scale solar projects. They will collaborate closely with engineering, procurement, and other stakeholders to deliver high-quality estimates that serve as the basis for proposals. The manager will ensure the team produces accurate and reliable estimates that meet client expectations and are submitted for review and approval. They will also oversee the process of optimization and technical alignment with customers to ensure scope alignment.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Reviews and approves all estimates for which the Estimating Manager is responsible.
  • Supports strategic direction and approach for each bid, working with the Director of Estimating to assign a Lead Estimator for each project.
  • Mentors and trains estimators in the estimating process, providing opportunities for growth and development in support of business needs.
  • Ensures a disciplined approach to site investigation, estimating, client needs, schedule development, design strategy, and procurement selections.
  • Establishes and implements Pre-bid and Bid Review processes.
  • Develops a team environment between business development, estimating, contracting, engineering, procurement, and operations in preparing bids, ensuring all stakeholders understand deliverables and submittal timing.
  • Collaborates with the Procurement and Operational Excellence team to understand innovative options, new technology, and new means/methods used to construct projects, ensuring estimators are thinking and working towards a market-leading approach.
  • Facilitates and works with Procurement to understand cost trends of materials and equipment, advising Procurement on competitiveness of suppliers and vendors.
  • Assists the Lead Estimator in preparing for internal and executive Bid reviews.
  • Encourages and ensures estimating team travels to projects to understand build sequence, perform time-studies, and discuss means and methods with superintendents and field supervisors to improve cost position in the market.
  • Ensures feedback from the field is integrated into the estimating software, ensuring production rates, means, and methods are consistently up to date.
  • Manages the estimating platform implemented by PRE, ensuring software integrates with other business systems as needed, and updates the B2W cost databases with salaries and wages, equipment rates, material costs, crew assemblies, and task assemblies.
  • Works with the Director of Estimating and Chief Estimator to continuously evaluate and improve bidding and estimating processes, templates, procedures, and tools.
  • Participates in trade shows, conferences, and industry news to ensure the Department/Company is keeping up with market trends and technological innovations and improvements.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Prefer a BS degree in a business, Construction Management, or Engineering program.
  • Experience in Solar, Renewable Energy, or Power Generation required.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years' self-performed solar estimating and/or field experience, with preference given to those with field installation/management experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of personal computers and software applications with MS office application proficiency, with extreme proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Working knowledge of estimating software programs, with preference for experience with B2W and WinEst.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in understanding scheduling, with scheduling software experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated analytical skills, written communications, and ability to compose basic and complex technical documents, formal letters.
  • Demonstrated skills in oral communications, with ability to make presentations to large, diverse groups.
  • Proven success in developing and maintaining internal and external relationships while effectively navigating organizational barriers.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills.
  • Working knowledge of project accounting practices and financial systems.
  • General understanding of Fixed Price, Time & Materials, Cost Plus, and Unit contract pricing mechanisms.
  • Working knowledge of techniques needed to lead and influence others in a matrix organization.
