Position Overview:
This role involves conducting comprehensive survey operations under the guidance of the Engineering Director or their representative. Responsibilities include the collection of existing topographical data, survey data analysis, and the creation of topographic base drawings, boundary surveys, and construction staking.
Key Responsibilities:
- Serve as a field inspector during construction projects as required.
- Collect and analyze survey data to produce precise scale drawings, establish benchmarks, and gather essential information for project planning and design.
- Collaborate with engineers to utilize survey data and standard specifications for developing plans for road and bridge enhancements.
- Conduct surveys to determine existing and proposed grades and quantities for cost evaluations.
- Establish right-of-way lines, property boundaries, and perform additional survey tasks such as control point establishment and alignment for various projects.
Documentation and Negotiation:
- Execute in-house title searches to fulfill right-of-way documentation requirements for federally funded construction initiatives.
- Gather property boundary data and draft necessary grading permits and construction easements.
- Act as the primary liaison for negotiating grading permits or construction easements with property owners.
Project Management:
- Ensure the orderly progression of construction by performing physical layout tasks as directed by project inspectors or contractors.
- Monitor construction alignment, maintain detailed records of staking data, and finalize measurements for as-built documentation.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with contractors, utility companies, and Road Department personnel to implement necessary field modifications during construction.
- Assist engineering staff with inspections and quality control testing related to projects.
Administrative Duties:
- Perform office tasks including form completion, record-keeping, and document reproduction.
- Ensure that colleagues have calibrated and operational survey equipment.
- Create project identifiers for Road Department initiatives and relay updates to the Finance Department.
- Supervise seasonal staff or assigned coworkers and respond to public inquiries.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Carry out other duties as assigned, demonstrating the ability to meet deadlines, adapt to changing project focuses, and multitask effectively.
- Maintain regular attendance and adhere to departmental confidentiality standards.
Qualifications:
- An Associate's Degree in Land Surveying or a related discipline is required; a Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
- A minimum of five years of experience applying surveying techniques in civil and transportation engineering is essential.
- Professional Surveyor registration in Michigan or Certification as a Survey Technician (Field Track, level III) is advantageous.
Working Environment:
- This position entails both indoor and outdoor work, with exposure to various environmental conditions.
- Travel to project sites and meetings is expected.
Physical Demands:
- The role requires the ability to perform various physical activities including lifting up to 50 pounds, effective communication, and proficient computer operation.
