Job Description

SUMMARY:

The Senior Chemical Engineer will lead formulation development activities as part of the NPI Engineering team. This hands-on position includes executing and coordinating new formulation development, vendor selection, material research and selection, preparing prototypes/samples, completing new chemical process review, defining process parameters and controls, and providing technical support to chemical engineering and production staff.

This position requires a scientist - chemist background; experience working with chemicals in a lab, creating formulations, working with material vendors for material selection, evaluating characteristics of polymer coatings, etc.

Focused on creation and development versus optimization and improvement.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead formulation development, coordinate project plans and execution.
  • Provide support and training to chemical engineering team members as new materials are introduced and formulations developed.
  • Work directly with program management and engineering to coordinate the design, development, and qualification of new coating formulations.
  • Proactively identify new vendors, materials, and solicit sample requests for new formulation feasibility testing.
  • Establish chemical process standards, develop testing protocols, prepare equipment, document test results, maintain records for analysis and prepare reports for internal and customer use.
  • Assist in the development and execution of Process Development Reports, DOE's, and Validation protocols as part of formulation development.
  • Sample Preparation and Execution: Responsible for meeting and/or exceeding expectations for quantity, quality, and delivery.
  • Develop and Execute DOEs for formulation and process characterization/optimization.
  • Comfortable working in both laboratory and manufacturing environments.
  • Train lab personnel and production staff, as needed, to support new formulation application.
  • Take part in all required training sessions related to Quality Assurance, Lean, Manufacturing Process, and EHS programs.
  • Participate in periodic testing and performance evaluations.

Essential Qualifications:
  • Bachelors' Degree in an engineering discipline (Chemical Engineer is preferred) and 5 - 10 years of experience working as a process engineer - (research, polymer chemistry, formulation/lab focused)
  • Knowledge of medical device manufacturing and/or ISO 13485 is preferred.
  • Effective team player who can work cross-functionally with Sales, Engineering, Production, and Quality personnel.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of engineering principles and procedures.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to perform in an independent manner with minimal direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of MS office, MS Project, AutoCAD, SolidWorks, JMP and ChemTrak preferred.
  • Experience working in a wet chemistry lab.
  • Knowledge of the metallurgical properties of Aluminum alloys

Physical Demands:

Requires mental and visual attention to detail as well as hand coordination. Occasionally lifting or moving average weight material. LANGUAGE SKILLS: Employee must be able to read and interpret documents written in English. Employees must be able to have good communication with fellow employees, supervisors, and management.
